Not many people may probably know RED the company but there is a brand called Red–Red Digital Cinema–that manufactures digital photography and cinematography cameras and accessories. There are numerous RED products on the market already but it’s only now that we’re this close to finally owning a RED product. Around the same time last year, the RED Hydrogen One was introduced as the world’s first holographic media machine. Note the “holographic media machine” description because this one is expected to be a powerhouse.

The RED Hydrogen One is expected to ship this summer. Believe it or not, it’s being delayed for the better. A few weeks ago, we said it would be ready soon from AT&T and Verizon and for real this time. We stopped doubting and we’re almost certain now this summer, those who will purchase the RED Hydrogen One, will get to enjoy the smartphone.

Verizon has just published a pre-registration page where you can sign up to receive updates that the the RED Hydrogen One is ready. As with any other special smartphones to enter the market, you can be the first know. Sign up for email alerts and you can be one of the first few consumers to get a hold of the RED Hydrogen One.

To review, here are a few things to know about the RED Hydrogen One. It will cost you some USD $1,195. It’s just the starting price because you can choose more premium specs. We’re almost certain it will ship anytime between June and September. According to our last report, some media outlets have already played around with the phone.

The much-awaited Android phone comes equipped with special features that are remarkable in their own ways. Here are five features you should know:

5.7-inch Holographic Screen

This special display is a first for any commercial smartphone. It may remind you a lot about Star Wars since the screen technology comes from Leia. No, not Prince Leia but a startup that provides light-field holographic display solutions for mobile. We have a feeling whoever thought of this technology is a hard-core Star Weeks geek. (Let’s hope Disney or George Lucas won’t go after him.) The effect won’t be achieved like in the movies but the holographic display is a good start. It will be a result of both hardware and software. It’s mainly an LCD-based screen that’s been modified to “synthesize light-field holographic content”.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor

The phone is said to run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 but we’re hoping an SD845 version will be ready soon. The Snapdragon 835 promises fast performance, impressive display from a mobile device, and with a smaller footprint.

Modular Technology

The phone supports different attachment modules that we’re assuming would allow a “cinema grade camera”. We’re also looking at swappable camera sensors like higher-quality camera modules that may capture 3D spatial audio.

4-View Video Capture

This feature works best with the holographic screen. From a single camera, RED devs decided on a dual camera system not just on the rear but also at the front. These cameras allow the user to capture 4V content in real-time.

Verizon Deal

This isn’t exactly a feature but the Verizon model of the RED Hydrogen One can be best experienced with Verizon Up so you can earn rewards by shopping or paying for your bills. For every $300 you spend, you can get a reward.
