The age of virtual reality has begun. There’s no need to argue because it still is in its early stages. Even with all the VR viewers being introduced and all the VR Released, this particular arena has yet to become a standard. It may take a long time before that happens but a lot of companies now, even non-tech organizations, are jumping on the bandwagon, hoping to gain the attention and interest of many people.
In the VR headset manufacturing sector, we only know a few who braved the waters. There’s the Samsung Gear VR and its other variants, the Google Cardboard, and the Oculus Rift. There are other hopefuls too like the Zeiss VR One, Wearality Sky, HTC Vibe, Impression Piw, XG Virtual Reality Headset, Viewbox VR Headset, and the MergeVR but they only have a small following and some are mighty expensive. It seems the problem of making virtual reality a reality is no longer a problem. The challenge now is to develop apps that will offer a memorable virtual reality experience.
VR experience is not just for gaming. A number of brands now are taking advantage of this technology. Google offers a number of VR apps on the Play Store. Samsung has enticed developers to create VR versions of their games. And ever since YouTube began to support 360-degree videos, several companies also decided to make their own VR apps for the consumers like Hulu. More can be found on the Google Play Store.
Perhaps the first in the publishing industry, The New York Times teamed up with Google to release the new NYT VR. This virtual reality app is expected to bring the VR experience to more hands, errr..eyes. The company will be distributing over a million Google Cardboard viewers to those loyal subscribers of home delivery service. The weekend of November 7 to 8, the subscribers will receive their copy together with a pair of Google Cardboard. Meanwhile, some subscribers of Times digital and Times Insider will receive promo codes to redeem a free viewer.
The New York Times worked with virtual reality studio IM360 to develop the app. The company has also started to work on VR films to be shown. It partnered with another VR company, Vrse, headed by Chris Milk, to shoot “The Displaced” as the debut film. It’s about the lives of three children from Syria, Eastern Ukraine, and South Sudan, caught amidst the current global refugee crisis.
Another film, titled “Walking New York” is also available as a behind-the-scenes glimpse to the cover image of the same title (screenshot above). Another film is in the works and we can expect it to be released before the year ends. Check out NYT YouTube channel for regular updates.
