Wear OS may be the rebranded Android Wear OS but Google wants to launch its own Wear OS-branded smartwatches. If they have the Nexus before and the Pixel line of phones, the tech giant is planning to make its way to the wearable industry by presenting more than just a platform. There is much truth to the idea as it was Evan Blass (@evleaks) himself who shared the news on Twitter. The master leakster showed off new devices he dubbed as “Google Smart Watches”.
The renamed Android Wear is basically the same but, of course, with several important enhancements. The Google Developer Preview that rolled out officially last March brought a bug that caused phone lags on watch. The wearables are receiving more Google Assistant features and Actions, as well as, an enhanced battery saver.
Nothing much on the three wearables shown off by Evleaks but we can tell they are of different variants and sizes. They will be equipped by a Qualcomm smartwatch chip and are codenamed as ‘Ling’, ‘Triton’ and ‘Sardine’. They are all related to the marine life–something Google is known for. Google loves fish and we remember the ‘Muskie’ and Walleye’ from last year.
Some information about the watches have been shared: they will run on the economical Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset and that they could unlock the Apple Watch. A Wear OS watch may no longer need a partner smartphone as it could run on its own.
We also don’t have information about the release date but we know Google and the partner OEMs are working hard on this project. Perhaps later this year?
