The virtual reality (VR) industry continues to mature and more and more technology is being supported in its functions. Take for example this new update that the Samsung Gear VR will now start supporting functional use of the Xbox Wireless Controller, first for Minecraft and then hopefully other games will get updated for this.

The Xbox Wireless Controller has been sort of expanding its reach. Recently, its firmware was updated to be supported across Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. Pretty soon, the Xbox Wireless Controller will start supporting controller-enabled VR games for the Samsung Gear VR, starting with Minecraft: Gear VR Edition. In the coming months, Microsoft hopes to have support for other Gear VR games like Herobound, Spirit Champion, Omega Agent, and End Space.

The update for supported Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6, or Galaxy S6 edge will be coming in October, and by then an update to Minecraft: Gear VR Edition will also be in plays. At that time, you can start building, exploring and battling mobs using your Xbox Wireless Controller.

Of course, the firmware update for your controller is what you will be waiting for the most, because that – combined with the other updates to devices and to games – will make this system work. We’re expecting other Gear VR games to follow suit and take advantage of this momentarily.

  1. Incorrect headline. It will NOT be supporting the Xbox 360 controller. It won’t even be supporting the original Xbox One controller. It will ONLY be supporting the NEWEST Xbox One controller which has BT connectivity (the first two do not).
