Sony may be looking into delivering Android 4.4, or at least Android 4.3, to some of its slightly older devices dating back as far as 2012, but some devices aren’t so lucky. But thanks to custom Android ROMs and the persistence of some individuals, the Sony Xperia go, Xperia P, Xperia Sola, and Xperia U might soon be enjoying the latest Android version via CyanogenMod 11.
These four devices definitely show their age when placed together with more recent devices. If these were released today, they would definitely fall under the low end of the spectrum. The Xperia U and Xperia P were the first to be unveiled in early 2012. While both run on a 1 GHz dual core processor, the Xperia U is the smaller and weaker of the two, with only 512 MB of RAM and a 3.5-inch 854×480 screen. In contrast, the Xperia P is larger with a 4-inch 960×540 display and 1 GB of RAM.
The Xperia sola was revealed just a month later and fits somewhere in between the Xperia U and Xperia P, at least in terms of size. It’s screen is a higher 3.7-inch, but the resolution, as well as the rest of the hardware, is pretty much the same as the Xperia U. It did boast of NFC support, which wasn’t that common at that time. The Xperia go was launched much later but is actually even smaller, with a 3.5-inch 480×320 resolution screen, but with the same 1 GHz dual-core processor and 512 MB of RAM. This smartphone’s call to fame, however, is its IP67 dust and water resistant qualities.
The video above demonstrates CyanogenMod 11, with Android 4.4, running on the Sony Xperia Go. Performance seems acceptable though it does show a bit of staggering during some animations. One should probably not expect blazing fast performance anyway, but given Android 4.4’s svelte mission, the device and the software sound like a perfect pair.
