Further details on Samsung’s incoming replacement to the Galaxy S, the colloquially named Samsung Galaxy S2, continue to emerge ahead of the smartphone’s expected launch at MWC 2011 next month. According to Korean site NocutNews, the Galaxy S2 – internally codenamed “Seine” – will use Samsung’s dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 “Orion” processor and run Android 2.3 Gingerbread with 1GB of RAM.

There’s also supposedly a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display running at WVGA resolution, an 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD video recording, and NFC, all in a smartphone tipped to be just 9mm thick. That fits in broadly with previous rumors, certainly, and leaves us particularly excited for Samsung’s MWC 2011 press event on February 13.

  1. Its still a Samsung. Only an idiot would buy a phone from Samsung after the neglect they’ve shown to their other phones and customers.

    • Yep, buy this phone and I can count on not being stuck with 2.3 for a long time because I’ll put whatever the hell I want on it, when something besides 2.3 comes out. Instead of whining, I take things into my own hands. You just go ahead and let someone else tell you what to do, little boy.

  2. Seriously just wow.. I was set on atrix, but I’ve got a honoring orion cpu’s are going to destroy them… Couple that with everything else including nfc, unlocked boot loader and wow wee.. If it’s released writhing a month of atrix I may just hold out..

Also me personally… Not going to have any problems rooting that phone and putting cyan on it if samsung decide to twiddle thumbs on next update… But that’s me and I know not everyone is comfortable with that…

  3. Samsung has been slacking hard. I read this article and underneath the first paragraph is an advertisement for the Samsung galaxy S. How ironic. Not only do they try to copy iphone with their app drawer, but they leave out features and components they could’ve and should’ve put in the first unit. No camera flash! Realy Samsung?
Never cared much for their devices. Screams iphone clone. No thanks. I’ll stick with Moto and buy an LTE Droid.

  4. Samsung hopes to continue SoC dominance with Orion just as they did with hummingbird which completely outclass the first gen Snapdragon SoC’s the 2nd gen however puts hummingbird to the test. What Samsung needs to address is the piss poor RFS file system and the even worse memory hog that TouchWiz is. Honestly I have a i9000 Galaxy S so updates are not much of an issue. But RFS and TouchWiz are issues. Of the 512mb if ram only 124mb are actually available for use by the user so opening more than 4 apps is out of the question. anyone that has used RyanZA’s lagfix would know the galaxy s cam score 2400 on quadrant with eclair while stock froyo can’t even break 1000. Nuff said.

  5. Is it really true that this thing doesn’t have flash? If it really doesn’t have flash, then that will be an absolute deal breaker.
Otherwise I’m seriously considering it. I know Samsung has been incredibly irresponsible with updates but I plan to root it and flash a custom rom.

  6. I always bet on Samsung for hardware and XDA for software. I see nothing wrong with this combination. As long as Samsung continues dominating the hardware specs I see little reason to look elsewhere…

In an open platform like Android official updates are irrelevant to begin with for those who know where to look.

  7. @ Stefanos, well said. I couldn’t have put it better myself. As long as Samsung pushes forward and innovates in terms of hardware, the software will be taken care of by XDAdevelopers.

@ Rod90, I agree with you regarding the RFS file system, that was poor indeed, however, memory utilisation is a different case. The reason that there is only 124MB available for use is because of Android 2.1 limitations imposed by Google. Therefore, its not Samsung’s fault that the software cannot utilise the full 512MB allocated.

That has changed with 2.2 and 2.2.1, which I’m currently running [Darky’s ROM], and has improved even more, with Gingerbread 2.3. There is over 350MB being used on my phone at the moment.

The reason you get better scores on Eclair 2.1 over Froyo’s 2.2 is because Quadrant Benchmark was designed with Eclair in mind and does not work properly with Froyo.

Even so a bunch of numbers indicating a high score or low score don’t mean anything, because its not a proper scientific test to prove hardware and software capabilities.

Another thing to fellow android users you’re worse than a bunch of girls, you know that. The phone has not been released yet, so stop speculating that the camera will not have flash and just enjoy the innovations coming through by Samsung et al.
