There’s no escaping Samsung news today as they made the splash and finally released to the public the much-hyped and much-leaked Samsung Galaxy Note 5. The Korean gadget giant is changing gears, focusing now on its phablet devices coming from the smartphone flagships early in the year. And in the Galaxy Note 5, we have a doozy – it’s stacked, hardware-wise. Allow us to show you what has improved 1 year after the release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which was no slouch to begin with.

Tangibly, we can say that you will immediately notice the difference between the two – and that is intentional. The Galaxy Note 5 is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, though you may have to hold it in your hands to feel that difference – the difference in size visually is pretty small. There’s a big change in the tactile feel of the new Note. No more faux leather for you, enter the sleek and tough (hopefully) Gorilla Glass 4.

Down to the nitty-gritty of the specs – both phones have that sharp 5.7-inch QHD (2560×1440) Super AMOLED display, but almost all internal specs have gotten a boost. There’s an upgraded octa-core Exynos 7420 processor, in big.LITTLE configuration – a 2.1GHz quad-core and a 1.5GHz quad-core. The Galaxy Note 5 is the second device we see with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, the first one being the OnePlus 2. We guess LPDDR4 should be pretty commonplace by 2016. It bears mentioning that Samsung has dropped the microSD slot, as expected. There are 32GB and 64GB variants of the Galaxy Note 5 where before, you could only go as high as 32GB. Both phablets have the 16MP main shooter, though the Note 5’s f/1.9 lens is a slight improvement over the Note 4’s f/2.0. The Note 5 also makes it better for selfies, the Note 4’s 3.7MP front camera has been upgraded to a 5MP sensor instead.

All in all, it’s a very comprehensive update, considering the software is a step up as well. There are numerous improvements to the S-Pen’s operations and the new phablet just starts up and operates that much faster. There should be more information soon when the full reviews start streaming out. But it looks pretty good at this point. Will you make that jump?

  1. Nope, they can’t even fix the S6 Edge memory problem when it should have been fixed months. It’s a smaller battery than the Note 4, doesn’t matter if they put a more efficient processor, it wont compare to other companies with bigger batteries on the benchmarks. An IR Blaster is a must have on smartphones, it couldn’t see the reason why Samsung removed it. How does it improve the phone thinnest, if that’s what they wanted. I absolutely love Zerolemon 10,000 battery in the Note 4, sad I won’t be able to change the battery out in the Note 5. If I am even able to get one, considering I’m in the EU

A terrible successor, no killer feature. I wait for a rom of the Note 5 that I can install on the Note 5 =) with better ram management

  2. They seem to have forgotten about Note Edge and S6 Edge users, no development on the edge panel for both devices. 3 panels in the store is a joke, who will even bother buying S6 Edge+, it’s a downgrade from the S6 Edge.

Still going to wait for the update to fix ram management as I really want to use Samsung Pay, but samsung has stopped anyone using it if they are rooted

    • LG G4 Note Pro is going to be what the Note 5 should have been. Hope they use their own custom chipset that will obliterate Note 5 benchmark =)

  3. I’ll hang onto my note 4 until the new LG is out. Can’t belive Samsung is not hearing the noise about replaceable battery and memory expansion.

  4. Where is the Samsung flagship Note 5 Edge? With Exynos 7422 all-in-one processor ready for next year’s network speed increases, with 10,000mAh or replaceable battery, with 256gig internal memory or SD ultra-high-speed support, with USBc port for ultra-fast charging and high speed data transfer, with improved world-class camera software, with sys-app to permanently delete Samsung and VerizonMobile bloatware, with wallet-cover in-the-box, with cordless keyboard in-the-box, with cordless charging base in-the-box? Come on, Samsung… Build a world-class flagship phone! Until then, I’ll keep using my Samsung Note 4 Edge and Gear S flagship devices.

  5. The power button should be on the top, it is impossible to change volume without shutting down the phone by accident when it is on the side. BIG MISTAKE!!!

  6. Need a dedicated physical camera button… Software buttons jump around and are impossible to see in bright light. BIG MISTAKE!!!
