Samsung may have announced the 8-core Exynos 5 Octa chip back in January during CES, however it wasn’t until today that we got word of when they would actually begin production. Samsung has said the processor should be in mass-production beginning in the second quarter of the year. This of course ties in nicely with the recent GALAXY S 4 announcement.

As we recently learned, the GALAXY S 4 will be running the Exynos 5 Octa processor outside the US. Those in the US will see the Qualcomm Snapdraon 600. Back to the production though. Looking at Q2 2013 means this should be kicking off sometime in April. Aside from the timeframe regarding the mass-production, Samsung hasn’t given up much more in terms of new details.

What we have comes from previous reports. Samsung has previously described the chip as featuring an “unprecedented eight-core ARM big.LITTLE architecture based on the Cortex-A15 CPU. Basically, that the processor has been built for efficiency. They give a fairly simple explanation in the video below.

Diving a bit further in and we have an 8-core processor that will be split between four Cortex A15 cores and Cortex A7 quad cores. This will break down by allowing certain tasks to be handled by certain cores. Samsung has said that the Cortex A15 will handle tasks to include heavy duty apps such as graphic-rich games and the Cortex A7 will handle the lighter tasks to include emailing, web searching and mapping. Or in terms of efficiency, this approach is said to be able to offer up to 70 percent energy saving when performing various tasks (as compared to using Cortex-A15 cores only).

      • Interesting you say that since the international s3 also uses an Equinox quadcore but then it was later included in the note 2 even for U.S. version which supports U.S. LTE. I’m guessing they can’t make enough octa chips for all the 100 million S4 they want to sell. If history repeats then I bet the note 3 will use the octa and it will support US LTE.

      • That’s a lie. My brother’s S3 has LTE and is a quad-core exynos. I live in Portugal. Both S4 versions will probably have LTE.

      • Can’t be correct: Australia just had the S4 announced on LTE carriers here running the Exynos Octa. Must be that the US uses different frequencies to the rest of the world.

    • Could be a number of reasons. One being maybe the LTE chip frequency is not correct for the frequency in the US. Logistics maybe, if they expect 10 million sold in the first month, I don’t know if they could made that many Exynos chips that fast, hence using another cpu in a different country.

Either way and for whatever reason, I do not want a Snapdragon. I was hoping for the Octa and I am not going to pay out for an international version just for the cpu. Guess I am stuck with my S2(i777) longer. I guess we’ll see how the Note 3 turns out, otherwise it might be time to go with a different brand.

  1. Plain and simple I think Samsung uses a strategy Galaxy S line products in the States get Snapdragon always. And the Galaxy Note line gets Exynos in the States always. Just like the Galaxy Note 2 got the Exynos 4 Quad last year you can rest assured that the Galaxy Note 3 will get the Exynos 5 Octa in September/October 2013. My Note 2 is the GOLD STANDARD of the industry today I will definitely be purchasing the Note 3 on launch day.

    • If the US version of the S line “always” gets the Snapdragon processors, then why were you saying not even a week ago that you “knew” the S4 would have the Exynos 5 Octa? Truth: you don’t know crap.

  2. Another dik sukin mouth sayin shitt they can’t bakup, DO NOT,I SAY DO NOT run ur mouth if u can’t produce a product on time because of a glitch HTC,I like ur spec.’s but!!!!!! I’ll say no mo!.
