If you’re following along with this Notion Ink Adam saga, you’ll know the name Rambler. This fellow also goes by the name Rambler358 and is a pre-order purchaser of the Adam Android tablet. Take a peek back at the original post where we mentioned Rambler’s story, then take a look at the video below where he displays his problems in a nicely shot video.

Rambler notes this video is: “Just a short video to show the blotchiness issue I have with my Adam’s Pixel Qi screen, as well as the defective camera.” As far as we know he’s already in negotiations with Notion Ink to get a full refund on his Adam tablet, but it’s nice to see video of the problems he’s got going on so that others can look for the same inconsistencies in their own tablet.

Thanks for the note, Rambler!

  1. I have pre-orderd Adam and still believe that most of the issues NI is facing are initial hiccups that will be set right soon. However, having said that, It is high time NI work proactively with customers like Rambler to solve their issues else their credibility will take a big hit.

    • IMO, you only get 1 chance to make a long lasting impression. Perhaps
      I’m less forgiving than most.

      • Is it possible for you to actually get the number of adams that were shipped by NI?
Everywhere i go i here the same old story by rambler and by mada. If 10 adams were shipped then it is definitely concerning, if thousands of them are shipped, then we have to ask a question to ourself, is it appropriate to base our impression on these few incidences. If you also want to know about good experiences, see several of customer experiences on the net and many happy users on you tube. For me atlest, i have seen more better reviews than bad. I am still going to order one. I am following adam for long and thats why i thouht of replying to you, i did not order with the first cycle because i have not drunk the kooled. Please find answer to my question and settle this issue once and for all.

      • Probably not, sorry.

        Thanks, V

      • so you dont belive in second chances?? What happned to the land of second chances and the comeback kid.
Really a they are just a few days into their first shippment. It is known that OLPC has low viewing angles.

I read this in OLPC news forum. Now PixelQi is based on this technology is this what we are seeing?
Anyway PixelQi is comeing out with screens with better viewing angles.
Also reminder that there are Adams with LCD screens too.

“The resolution of the panel is 1200×900. When it’s in the black-and-white mode, ambient light from the room (or the sun) is what illuminates the panel. In this mode, you see the white ambient light reflected back for each pixel on the display. This gives you an effective 1200×900 resolution.

When you turn up the brightness and the backlight turns on, now most of the light is coming from LEDs built in to the panel. Before passing through the actual LCD, the light passes through a diffraction grating, which splits it into narrow red, green, and blue stripes in a diagonal pattern. (If you look closely, you can see this pattern.) The display controller knows which pixels in the LCD will let through which color, and can turn on just the appropriate ones for that part of the screen. The display resolution is still 1200×900, but it takes 3 pixels on the XO’s display to convey the same color information of one pixel on a traditional LCD. The result is an effective resolution that’s somewhere around 800×600, depending on the nature of what you’re displaying”

  2. @Rambler

That is unfortunate you are having those problems with your Adam tablet.

My Adam tablet is fine, though at first I thought I had a problem with the camera until I realized there was a layer of protective plastic film over the lens that needed to be removed. Now the camera works great too.

I will post a video online later this week.

mine’s fine too. been playing with it for a week now. the hardware was all fine. i’ve found the ui a bit buggy but just replaced it with a better one. now it’s great! considering routing it for the market app etc but i think you were just unlucky dude.

    • .Greg I really question your integrity. I know you are a notion ink fan but sometimes have to look at facts. At this point you can’t say to everyone the adam is all that it is hyped out to be.
Just go to notioninkaddicts, even the French dude says it has contrast issues. It’s basically alpha hardware.

The fact the now it seems less than 30 Adams were shipped. It is quite sad. I am seriously not sure how you work in tech, cause how you gloss over the details. Yes the devil is in them. It makes me sad that you can so easily be influenced by cultish behavior.

Users like mada have proven of erratic glitches with the adam. You have not proven how great the Adam is or whether it can even come close to a almost year old iPad. Sorry buddy if I worked with you professional I would give you an F. Sad

      • @Rajbir,

I like my Adam tablet. I’m not asking anyone to agree with me. In fact I openly recommend that others do all the research they can and then make up their own minds about the Adam.

Maybe you see the facts differently, and possibly have different expectations. The Adam tablet is what I thought it would be, and it is becoming what I think it will be. I realize I am an early adopter and I was prepared for a few bugs. But my Adam does not have any hardware issues, and as updates are released things are improving. I pretty much expect that any remaining issues will be resolved by the time most people get their Adam tablets. Around the same time we’ll likely see Genesis and other features made available too.

Android tablets are new… And though you compare the Adam to an iPad, and refer to the iPad being a year old as a bad thing, that year has actually provided time for lots of great apps to be developed for it.

If Adam’s hardware is solid, then the apps and user interface are what will make or break the experience for the user. So give Android tablets in general some time and you will see a lot of great apps and improvement in all areas. I fully expect Adam’s user interface will continue to improve too, especially with the introduction of Honeycomb and the refinement and additions made by Notion Ink.

If you are skeptical, simply don’t buy one now. Wait and see if things pan out.

But I think you will find a lot of people are going to like their Adam tablets…

Now, please also keep in mind that the Pixel Qi display is different than a conventional LCD display. It provides outdoor usability, improved battery life, and is easier on the eyes. If a person is going to read outside a lot then they should consider it.

However, in a side by side comparison with a conventional LCD display, the LCD will have colors that are more vivid, possibly better contrast, and wider viewing angle. I personally think I would prefer the LCD since I do not plan to read much outdoors, and because I’m willing to sacrifice a little battery life.

With that said, my Adam tablet happens to have a Pixel Qi display. And I have it on my desk streaming music videos right now and it looks great. As a personal use device the viewing angle is not an issue for me either.

Eventually technology will improve and we will have displays providing outdoor usability without sacrifice in other areas. But for now, luckily everyone can choose which display to get for themselves.

In closing, I hope it is apparent that I simply provide my opinion to be considered with all the other opinions out there. And even though everyone is welcome at notioninkfan.com, no one is forcing anyone to visit there or read my comments elsewhere if they don’t want to.

        Regards,
        –Greg

      • @rajbir Where exactly have you got your information from? So far ive seen only 3 adams that have these blotched screens.. and only ramblers adam which has a defective camera. If you think this is a alpha product i wonder what your thoughts are on Apple and the iPhone.. even with the 4th version it wont make stable calls even if your life depended on it… If you have ever pre-ordered a tech product in your life before you will know that such things are bound to happen.. stop being a paranoid little bitch and deal with it. Level headed people would still prefer to buy an Adam rather than waste money on an oversized ipod touch.

Why arent we seeing any of the better user experiences on this site I wonder?

  3. Rambler got approval for a full refund from NI but hasn’t heard back in a number of days with a shipping label since they promised to pay for return shipping.

  4. It’s a shame when you order something for six hundred dollars from so far away and then not have it work. I am in the pre-order group that was delayed by the damage during shipment problem NI had. I’d rather get delayed than go through returning something that isn’t working right.

Best of luck to you Rambler. Looks like your plight will be a test for NI’s customer service. I hope things work out for you so we can feel good about our own NI purchases.

  5. It’s a shame that the Adam Tablet turned out to be more hype than what was actually delivered to people. I’ve seen a few blogs and was sent one personal e-mail from someone who owns the tablet that stated in a nutshell that they were expecting one thing and instead got another. It was a real let down for them. The people at Notion Ink talked a pretty good talk, but in the end could not deliver what they promised. Instead people are having to root their devices just to get what they need out of the tablet. I cancelled my order because I was tired of all the excuses on delays, no communication from customer service and pretty much what I saw was SOME people appeared to be almost forcing themselves to give it a passing review but not a great review. I don’t know whether they were giving it passing reviews because they wanted to save some face and not have people tell them “I told you so”, or an attempt to convince themselves the product was good because of the money they paid for the device. I can only hope that Notion Ink delivers on it’s future promises and put’s out a decent product that makes it shine as a reputable company and not a controversial one.

  6. Sorry guys I meant for that to be a little more coherent…

    http://www.notionaddicts.com/forums/showthread.php/1679-You-think-Adam-pre-order-was-bad-FLASH-iPhone-4-pre-order-is-a-total-disaster!

Everyone is pissin NI for these errors but look at it in context with apple and their iphone 4 pre-order fiasco. What about that whole antenna debacle?

Now consider the fact that NI is a small company now starting off in the market. While they have to work on stuff and things, I think the demonizing is slightly unwarranted.

    • Why is that you guys always want to compare the things that happened with other companies to N.I, but if someone wants to compare how other products are superior then it’s a no go. You want to compare apples antenna, but if someone says well there are other aspects of the tab that is much better then you guys shout not to compare them. The bottom line is that N.I screwed up several times thats has nothing to do with apple or any other company. N.I screwed up it is that simple and they should be held to the same standard as anyone else. Thats what being in business is about. If you go to a new restaurant and they mesh up your order you are going to send the food back, you are not going to say well this is a new place so it okay thats just things work.

  7. I really hope this device makes it in the “Tablet” industry. It really does have a lot of potential, if only they would have waited and released this with a honeycomb UI and with all their apps functioning, then I think they would’ve had more positive reviews.

  8. NI’s next product should be better.
Hmmm…the next tablet, son of the Adam.
They should call it Cain, because it slew Apple….er Able.
    ;’)

  9. I’m not so bad with hardware issues like this, these types of things get fixed, especially an later releases. It’s better than having an over all underpowered product or one with just a crappy interface that you know will never be fixed. Still waiting for a few thorough reviews before I buy this though. Hope it is good, it sounds like it could be a hell of a product.
