Last week, we reported on Motorola CEO, Sanjay Jha’s comments that the major cause of up to 70% of all Motorola phone returns were because of poor performance due to third party apps downloaded from the Android Market. Now Motorola is saying claiming miscommunication. They are saying that the implication was not that 70% of returns are due specifically to 3rd party apps, but due to software in general.

Now, “software issues” is pretty vague and in reality could be referring to Motorola’s own Motoblur software just as likely as any app from the Android Market. Seeing as how Sanjay Jha DID say he sees Motoblur as a potential solution to these software related returns, we can probably assume they don’t see they’re customizations as the cause. Whether Motorola still does hold the returns against the 3rd party apps, or thinks it’s because of the Android OS itself, which could feed that rumor of Moto working on their own OS.

All speculation aside, given that this seems like a clear backtrack, it means if nothing else, that Motorola realizes how important the developers who publish their apps to the Android Market are. Android’s openness may result in less than perfect apps a lot of the time, but it also fosters some of the most creative and technically powerful apps to run on a mobile device. Hopefully Motorola comes to a bit more of an appreciation for this openness like Samsung has recently.

  1. My DroidX performed poorly out of the box. It wasn’t until I installed LauncherPro that the performance got at least bearable.

I’d say stock Android would perform much better than MotoBlur in any situation on any phone.
