It’s been almost a year since we last heard from this maker of child friendly tablets, but it seems that Fuhu hasn’t completely gone silent yet. Rolling out over the air today are updates to its nabi 2 kids tablet and nabi XD “tweens” tablet that are big not only in size but in new features as well.

The older of the two, the nabi 2, caters to the younger group. Fuhu announced the 7-inch tablet in June last year and targets kids with its bright red, rubbery case and interface designed specifically for toddlers. The nabi XD, on the other hand, was unveiled in December and focused on a slightly older “tween” age group, sporting a larger 10.1-inch display and suite of productivity apps and, of course, games. Neither tablets are simply toys, however, as they both run on quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processors.

Fuhu has just released an update for both the nabi 2 and the nabi XD which, while keeping Android to the original 4.0 and 4.1 versions, respectively, introduces substantial new features. For the nabi XD, the update brings in the nabi Launcher which allows users to customize the homescreen to dynamically change depending on location or time of day. The nabi 2, on the other hand, gains Time Controls that will let parents set time limits and rewards for using the tablet, a must feature in any tablet for toddlers. Both tablets will also get the NOOK for nabi app, giving access to a curated collection of over 5,500 titles.

There are other big features included in the update, not to mention the usual bug fixes and performance improvements. It is no surprise, then, that the update will require at least 1 GB of free storage on the nabi 2 and 1.5 GB for the nabi XD. The update is only available via OTA, so make sure that your connection is good and that the tablet is properly backed up.
