Toshiba has introduced a mid-range tablet to compliment their recent introduction of higher end devices to the market. We’ve seen tis one before in benchmark tests, but now we have a name: the Excite 7. The Excite 7 is the smallest Toshiba has on offer at — you guessed it — a 7-inch screen. It doesn’t pack much of a spec punch, but the price is right.

That 7-inch screen is going have a 1024×600 resolution, and a quad-core processor with 1GB RAM. It will have a two cameras — a 3MP shooter not he back, a 0.3MP variant on the front — and 8GB of memory. The Excite 7 will also have a microSD card slot, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, stereo sound powered by SRS, and will be running Android 4.2.2.

Toshiba claims the tablet will get 13 hours of use with “general usage”, and 8 hours of video playback. They’ve not disclosed the size of the battery, but if it’s a decent size, we can see those numbers being accurate. The Excite 7 comes in silver, and weighs in at 0.77 pounds.

For $170, this may just be the mid-range tablet to get. Toshiba builds solid products, and while it’s not a powerhouse device, it’s a good entry level offering. You’ll get much more with a $70 upgrade to a Nexus 7, but if money is a concern this holiday season, this one is nothing to turn your nose up at. The Toshiba website notes it starts shipping tomorrow, so there would be almost no waiting.
