Giving owners of its slightly older PadFone devices something to look forward to, ASUS has announced an Android 4.4 update coming their way. Though the update won’t be arriving until later this year, it should at least give current users some hope for their devices.
It’s been more than a year since the PadFone 2 entered the scene in 2012, bearing with it a new PadFone smartphone/tablet design, a 4.7-inch 720p screen and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro. Both versions of the PadFone Infinity, on the other hand, are more recent, with the first one appearing February 2013 with a Snapdragon 600, and the second later in September with a Snapdragon 800, both bearing 5-inch 1080p screens. Although ASUS has announced newer models in the PadFone line these past months, it is apparently not yet done with the these models either.
The specific models getting the latest Android 4.4 version include the PadFone 2, the PadFone Infinity, as it known in Asian and Russian markets, the identical PadFone A80 in Europe, and the New PadFone Infinity, with the model number A86. Aside from Android 4.4, the update will also bring in ZenUI, ASUS’ brand new custom Android interface. ZenUI debuted at CES 2014 last month on the ZenFone smarpthone series and the Intel-based PadFone mini. It will be interesting to see this UI with some real world testing and if it can compete with the likes of Samsung’s TouchWiz or HTC’s Sense.
ASUS of course isn’t giving exact dates but there will be different schedules for the devices. The PadFone 2 and older PadFone Infinity (the A80) will get their update by the end of Q2 2014. Owners of the New PadFone Infinity (A86) will have to wait a bit longer until some time in the third quarter of this year.
