Back in late June, we spent a bit of time with the Archos G9 tablet. At the time, we knew all there was to know about the Archos G9 and its sibling with a vague launch date of “this fall” and a price pegged at $279. We know for instance that the G9 will run Android 3.1 and will be offered with up to 250GB of storage. The tablets also both have the option of a 3G USB dongle to get mobile broadband on the go.

The tablet uses a dual-core TI OMAP 4 processor that we found to be slow compared to the Tegra 2. That TI processor under the Archos G9’s hood runs at 1.5GHz. The devices we played with were prototypes so we are hoping the performance is better in the final versions. At the time, the price was pegged to start at $279 with the base 8GB of storage. The tablet has gone up now that it has a September launch date. The G9 80 with the 8-inch screen will start at $299.99.

The G9 101 with the 10-inch screen will start at $369.99. There is no word on what the version with 250GB of storage will sell for. With the higher prices and no corresponding bump in features, I wonder if the G9 tablets will be as appealing to consumers on the hunt for a new tablet. What do you think? Are these tablets worth the bump in price?

  1. From the pricing and specs info from the Archos store,  not only is there a price hike, but also a specs cut. For the 80, the $300 model has only a 1.0GHz SoC. For the 101, both the $370 and $400 models are also 1.0GHz. You have to pay for the top-end $470 model to get the 1.5GHz speed.

If you think the 1.5GHz model is already slow, then I doubt the 1.0GHz to be an improvement. Frankly, I find the Archos marketing to be deceptive and leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

    • so how much ram do they have? i cant find that spec anywhere on the net. just wanting to know if it will be worth waiting for or if i should just get my tablet now.

  4. The price for good tables are extremely high. So even with the price increase ARCHOS will be in the lead for the most affordable Android 3.1 tablet. The features are neck in neck with the xoom but i think the 250gb hard drive beats the competition.

  5. it seems all you guys have red basically nothing about the specs of this tablet! DUAL CORE 1.5GHZ that means that you should spread grease and oil on your Nvidia Tegra 2 processors and tablets!!!!!!!!

  6. I am shopping for tablet. Asus eee transformer pad costs $100 more when you want to buy 32GB. I am waiting for Archos. It seems like they will be beating competition –for a week or two at least:-)
