Together with the launch of the more affordable Moto Z Play Droid, Motorola is also launching the US-ready version of the Hasselblad True Zoom Moto MOD. We’ve talked about what Moto MODs are – essentially they are accessories that you can connect to the back of your Moto Z for added features. And we’ve talked about this intriguing camera addition to the Moto Z, but now the hype is over – it is here.
The Hasselblad True Zoom Moto MOD can be connected to any Moto Z phone variant aims to give users a higher level camera experience than just normal phone camera photography, but that’s not to say that phone photography on the Moto Z is bad – in fact it is actually pretty good. But first hands-on impressions from the Hasselblad True Zoom suggests that the quality gets even better with it connected, and it might actually be worth the expensive price Motorola is asking for it.
The Hasselblad True Zoom makes 10x optical zoom and shooting in RAW format an actual reality. See the image below, a wide angle shot of a farm (with a chicken’s head visible) taken by the Hasselblad Mod with these settings: f/3.5, 1/100, 4.5mm, ISO160. The image under that shows a zoomed-in shot of the chicken’s head using these settings: f/6.5, 1/50, 45mm, ISO140. As you can see, there is very little noise and distortion on the shot.
The Hasselblad True Zoom Moto MOD will be up for pre-order starting September 8, and will officially start shipping out by September 15. If you get it from Verizon, you’ll only have to pay USD$249.99 as opposed to the USD$299 on Motorola’s own web store.
