Helvetica 1 smartwatch

The era of smartwatches has finally begun. Development may be a bit slow but this year, we’ve seen more and more companies joining the bandwagon. It’s not just phone makers and electronics manufacturers coming up with their own models. Even the top watch brands are getting into the game. Tag Heuer already announced a luxury smartwatch which will come with a hefty price tag later this year. Casio also decided to enter the smartwatch market early next year. We’re guessing more watch makers will also decide to join the market before smartwatches become very common.

The latest company to enter the market is Swiss watchmaker Mondaine. Watch enthusiasts who know this brand will be glad to know that the Helvetica 1 which was introduced at Baselworld last March is now ready for pre-order. If you’re thinking of getting one, don’t take much time deciding because only 1,957 units will be made available. Why exactly 1,957? It’s the year the Helvetica font was introduced.

The Helvetica 1 is a smartwatch alright but don’t expect much from it. It’s not as “smart” compared to the latest smartwatches we’ve tried. There won’t be notifications as this one can only be used to track fitness activities and sleep quality. Simply put, it’s a glorified fitness tracker, more classy and traditional looking because of the analog face. The digital display can only be found on the sub-dial. Watch can track the number of steps, total distance walked, or calories burned.

Yet to be available this coming September, Mondaine Helvetica 1 is compatible with both iOS and Android via a special app. As with any regular watch, battery life can go up to two years. Smartwatch isn’t that high-tech but it’s very pricey starting at $850 and can cost up to $950.
