It’s that time of the year when developers are busy preparing for the Google I/O conference. Google especially is working harder year after year to deliver the best sessions. It’s one tech event that reporters, bloggers, and fans around the world look forward to because it is when the latest Android platform is revealed. This year, we have the Android M to be excited about and we’re expecting the guessing game for what the letter “M” could be–Muffin? Milkshake? Macaron? Meringue? Your guess is as good as mine.
Google has already released the conference schedule and looks like the two-day event will be packed with interesting breakout sessions. Not much have been given but speculations now abound about what to expect. This conference is for the developers, what Google describes as the the creative coders who are building what is next. The search giant continues to partner with devs to explore and bring the latest in mobile and technology.
There was a short mention of ‘Android M’ in one particular Android at Work session. It’s somehow expected because the Android team always introduces a new one each year. In the next few weeks leading to the event, expect to hear more Android M rumors.
As early as September last year and even before the Android Lollipop was revealed, anticipation for it already started. We said that it would feature an Android debugging tool called Logcat. That was a few months ago and a lot could have changed.
The next Android M could have more tie-ins with the enterprise zone as we’ve seen the Android for Work and Chrome for Work recently. Google could be working on more features for work and businesses and not just improve on play and entertainment. More and more people and even small businesses are using Chrome, Chromebooks, and their Android devices so Google could be taking advantage of that.
There’s also a reference to a wearable that is something to be excited about but it comes via Google ATAP so maybe we shouldn’t be too hopeful. It could only be just a concept or a demo but we’ll see.
Another feature to expect is “Voice Access” that has something to do with controlling apps with voice commands. Android M could have that feature. There’s one session entitled “Your app, now available hands-free” which says a lot about what to expect. Hands-free access to apps is not impossible and we could be hearing more “Ok Google do this, do that” commands.
This “Voice Access” seems to do more than just launch apps but it could do more within the apps. Controlling apps via Voice Access–now that’s something interesting to look forward to. Google has allotted two sessions for this subject so Voice Access could be a major feature. We’ll see about that later this May.
