The idea of a PlayStation phone excites smartphone fans and gamers alike. We have been hearing grumblings about a new PlayStation phone from Sony Ericsson for a while now. We heard this month that the device might be called the Xperia Play and right before that we picked up a rumor that the smartphone could be landing in March.

Another rumor has surfaced that claims the PS Phone will be coming in the spring of 2011. That fits in pretty well with the March rumor we heard before. The spring 2011 date rumor comes from a report in the Japanese paper Asahi Shimbun today. According to the report, the device will be based on the PSPgo and will have the familiar gaming controls.

I can see a smartphone version of the PSPgo succeeding where the Go portable console was an epic fail. The paper says that the smartphone will go on sale first in the US and Europe when it launches. Sony has made no comment on the story other than to say it doesn’t comment on rumors.
