So Xiaomi continues to push through the year unveiling one device after another, and it seems that our month would not be complete if we don’t announce something new from the Chinese gadget manufacturer. Xiaomi is going to try virtual reality (VR) on for size, this time with a new VR headset called the Mi VR Play.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Xiaomi if we’re not surprised in one way or another at the Mi VR Play. First up, the company says the headset will fit any phone with sizes from 4.7 to 5.7 inches. And the innovative take? They’re using a plastic zipper to keep your phone in place. But hey, if it works, then it works, right? Also, Xiaomi is offering the headset initially for beta testers at a ridiculously low price of RMB1, or just around 15 cents (more on this later).
The other surprise is that the Mi VR Play comes in a variety of “bold prints and colors” – included in the list are denim, leopard print, black camo, and err… Van Gogh’s “Starry Starry Night.” Suffice it to say that Xiaomi is willing to experiment with the look of the device to see what works in their market.
The device is still under beta testing in China – the company says that over one million people signed up for the beta test – so there is no market price yet for the device. We hope to know soon, but expect it to seriously cost more than the 15 cents it is costing beta testers now.
