The Xiaomi Redmi 3 finally gets an upgrade with fingerprint sensor, 32GB built-in storage, and 4GB RAM. Now known as the Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro, this flagship device sports the same metal body but is more powerful than ever with the boost in specs. We’ve been waiting for this new variant of the Redmi 3 ever since it was sighted on TENAA. It was actually a quick follow up since the 4100mAh battery-powered Redmi 3 was only launched back in January.

So now there’s the Redmi 3 and Redmi 3 Pro. As announced by Xiaomi in a press event, features are almost the same: 5.0-inch screen, 720 x 1280 pixel resolution display, Snapdragon 616 processor chipset, microSD card slot, Dual SIM card slot, 13MP rear camera, 5MP selfie camera, 4G/LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 4100 mAh battery. The difference would be the bigger 32GB storage, 4GB RAM, and the fingerprint sensor. Sorry but Redmi 3 Pro will still run Android 5.1 Lollipop–no Marshmallow yet.

Color options are also the same: Gray, Silver, and Gold. The best information we can share is the price. The Pro variant is still affordable at only $140. That’s just $30 more costly than the $107 Redmi 3. Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro will be available starting April 4. Expect the device to be showcased at the Xiaomi Mi Fan Festival next month.

In the same event, Xiaomi also launched its first product offering for the ‘Mi Eco-system’. It’s the Chinese company’s own version of a smart home network. The first appliance to be “connected” is a smart rice cooker. It will be under Xiaomi’s sub-brand called Mijia. (Mijia when translated means “rice home”)

This Mijia Mi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker is described as high-end and smart. It works with a compatible app so you can adjust the softness of the rice according to your preference. The app will read the code written on the rice package. Data will be uploaded to the cloud and information on the correct heating method will be provided.

Xiaomi worked with Japanese engineer Naito Takeshi to lead the team developing the rice cooker. It’s not just like any other cooker because the company made sure it is of high quality. As expected, the smart kitchen appliance is still affordable at only 999 Yuan (CNY) which is about $150. Sure, you can get a cheaper rice cooker but this one is really smart.
