Xiaomi is not giving up top gadget manufacturer stakes in China, not by a long shot. Although it recently gave up top position to Huawei, 2016 looks to be a good year for them as they diversify their product line and market reach. One of these new products is the Xiaomi Mi Box, and Android TV-powered set-top box that is set to launch in the US pretty soon.

The Xiaomi Mi Box is not a monster in terms of specs, especially when compared to the industry-leading NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV console, but it does bring some solid features at probably a better price point. The Mi Box will be powered by a quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, supported by a Mali 450 GPU and 2GB RAM. Those are not mind-blowing specs by any measure, but the Mi Box somehow promises a lot of features that other Android TV boxes don’t have.

First up, this sleek new box brings 4K video playback at a smooth 60 frames per second quality. In terms of image quality, contrast and brightness, the Mi Box is also HDR ready. It will run on the new HDMI 2.0a standard, and will come with VUDU, Netflix, and FandangoNOW onboard. It will be run by Android TV, so expect Youtube to be in there, as well as the Google Play Store to install all your favorite apps.

We are still wondering how the Mi Box will be able to pull this off with specs that are in all honesty middling at best. But if it does give good performance, you can be sure this will challenge most of the Android TV boxes already available in the US market. Xiaomi has not yet put out when this will be available and the pricing, but that can’t be far away now.
