Vivo X5 Pro retina scanner

Fingerprint scanners are still not a standard in smartphones but some premium flagship phones and tablets already have them. The likes of the Samsung Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6/S6 edge, Note 4, Meizu MX4 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Tab S, Pantech Vega Secret Up, and the HTC One Max have fingerprint scanners used for several security and authentication purposes. While the technology is still in its early stage, there is potential for biometrics to be bigger.

Just the other day, we talked about Yahoo Lab’s bioprint technology project. With the use of capacitive sensing, biometric features of a person can be detected as a new biometric authentication system. We don’t know if Yahoo will indeed advance this technology but biometrics still has the potential to be widely used and become a standard.

We’ve already heard of a retina scanner on future flagship phones from the top phone makers: Samsung and Apple. This time, it’s Vivo‘s turn. Rumor has it that the next-gen Vivo X5Pro will be able to read the eye of a user to improve phone security. The retina scanner can read the pattern of veins in an user’s eye and remember it for future access. Others are saying that this tech is even better and more secure than a fingerprint scanner.

The upcoming Vivo X5Pro is said to have this new retina scanner based on a recent teaser. Specs of the smartphone include a 64-bit Snapdragon 615 CPU, double-sided 2.5D glass panels, front and rear cameras with unknown megapixels but images can be stitched to make a 32MP photo, fingerprint sensor, phase-detection AutoFocus, and a new USB Type-C connector. Vivo’s Android OS version is believed to be the Funtouch OS 2.1 which is still based on Lollipop.

We don’t have much details or when the Vivo smartphone will be revealed but we’re interested to know if retina scanner on phones has a future. It’s not impossible but do we really need it?
