For someone who loves the game very much, I’m happy to learn that Ustwo, maker of the popular and mind boggling geometric challenge Monument Valley, saw a lot of success with the game. The game developer recently published an infographic showing numbers of official sales, revenue, downloads, upgrades, development costs, most played chapters, and in-game camera usage. The Apple Design Award Winner in 2014 which was also tagged as Appstore’s iPad Game of the Year first came to iOS but the beautiful, serene puzzle game quickly came to Android. After a few months, more chapters were added to Monument Valley in an update.
As of January 15, 2015, official sales of Monument Valley reached 2,440,076. More than 1.7M were from iOS, a little less than 300K were from Google, and the rest were from Amazon (92K paid, 407K free). The game has been installed on over 10,000,000 unique devices.
Revenue from the game reached a total of $5,858,625—most of which where from iOS. Nearly 82% from iOS, 13.9% from Google Play, and a small 4.3% from Amazon. When the game was launched on the App Store on the 3rd of April 2014, revenue was $145,530. It’s the highest one-day revenue ever for the $3.99 game.
When the Android version was released, Ustwo also hit a high revenue of almost 140K. When Monument Valley went on sale at $1.99 back in July. During special milestones, Ustwo saw higher revenue especially after they received the Apple Design Award and during the Google Play Summer Sale. When the expansion pack was released in November, sales went up again. And as expected during the Christmas season and after it was named as the iPad Game of the Year, more than 100K people downloaded Monument Valley (perhaps out of curiosity).
Official sales by country, at least for the iOS version, 38% were from the United States followed by China at 12%, and UK and Germany at 5% each. Japan, Canada, Russia, and Australia were below five percent but 21.7% of the official sales were from other countries combined.
The original Monument Valley game cost $852,000 and was completed within 55 weeks. The Forgotten Shores version took the team 29 weeks to finish with a $549,000 budget. Game was also localized into 13 languages.
Of all the people who downloaded the game, 50% of them actually finished the game. Only 24% of the players bought the Forgotten Shores extension pack. More than two million players unfortunately drowned the Totems. And from the fans, more than 200 creations were submitted to the Monument Valley Tumblr page. Monument Valley was also the Most Reviewed Mobile Game of 2014 according to Metacritic.
