The smartwatch era has clearly begun. Actually, we’re already in the stage that it can be considered as a standard wearable gadget. It’s becoming more common each week and more OEMs are now entering the smartwatch arena. Features are usually basic but companies are looking for ways to manufacture more hi-tech smartwatches, if not, supper affordable ones for more people to enjoy. We’re sure that you have your own ideas and concepts of how to innovate the smartwatch just like the recent patent Samsung filed for. That or maybe something like this dual screen smartwatch by a Dartmouth researcher.
The researcher worked with other collaborators and came up with Doppio. These are dual touchscreens that can be used on a wearable device. The video shows us how the they could work on a smartwatch. It’s only a prototype but at least you get the idea. It’s merely a concept and the people behind this project were able to show off their findings last week at the CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.
The idea is that the touch-sensitive displays work together. One display can be detached from the other screen which can then be stuck on the side or on top perhaps with the use of magnets. The possibilities are endless and the presentation shows us different ways to manipulate and configure a smartwatch with dual screens. People use such devices in many ways and these interactions were looked into by the researchers.
Dartmouth’s Computer Science Assistant Professor Xing-Dong Yang explained:
“The orientation of the top relative to the base and how the top is attached to the base create a very large interaction space. Our proof-of-concept hardware prototype demonstrates how Doppio interactions can be used for notifications, private viewing, task switching, temporary information access, application launching, application modes, input and sharing the top.”
You can do many things with dual screens. You see, a small screen is not enough. That’s why mini projectors are being planned and now this. Any way to extend the screen is pretty welcome so expect more related ideas to be published soon.
