It’s true that Sony will no longer release the Z6. We weren’t even sure that last year’s Xperia Z5 would have a follow-up so we were surprised when the Japanese company unveiled the new Xperia X series at the Mobile World Congress as replacement for the old Xperia Z line. Don’t be bummed that there won’t be a Z6 because it’s simply just a name change.
Sony is in the process of rebranding some products, hopefully, to attract new and more mobile consumers. The previous Xperia Z phones are still available. For one, the Xperia Z5 phones are still as attractive as ever. We didn’t see an Xperia Z4 Stateside but in Japan, Sony went on to unveil the Z4 which is actually just a Z3+. Not much has changed and so when Sony released the Xperia Z5 plus its Compact and Premium variant, the mobile industry was given more options. The Z5 line was only made available in some countries the past few months but in Japan, it’s already widely popular.
The standard Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium can now receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. It includes a number of bug fixes and some enhancements like the new Xperia Home launcher, Call History or “call history filter” on the screen, security patches for fingerprint sensor, new Camera app UI, fast switching option between photo and video, and application screen visibility. This particular release in Japan also means other countries and variants are about to receive the software update.
