We’ve seen it for months, and we even talked about it previously, and people have been anticipating having this bad boy (or rather, good boy) in their hands. Finally, our keyboarding dreams have come true as Microsoft’s Universal Folding Keyboard is now available in gadget stores near you (hopefully). Not only is it compatible with any device, regardless of platform, but it is also thin and foldable, so it really won’t make an impact on your bag (but maybe it will on your wallet, a little).

Gone are the days when Microsoft would just create products for Microsoft users. Now, everyone is welcome to the digital party, whether you’re on Android, iOS, and of course, Windows, as long as you have Bluetooth 4.0. You can even use it with two devices at once, as it has a dedicated switching button at the top so you can toggle between using a smartphone and then switching to a tablet.

The magnetic clasp help keep your keyboard shut, in case you’re scared of it suddenly opening when it’s in your bag, and then typing gibberish onto any of the connected devices. When you close and lock the keyboard, it automatically powers down anyway, so no problem. And when you open it, it will turn on by itself. The 5.5mm thick (or thin) water-resistant keyboard can slip into your bag, big or small.

Microsoft’s Universal Folding Keyboard is now available through their online store. Its SRP is $99.95, which is of course more expensive than the first gen which was just at $80 and the keyboard wasn’t foldable back then.

  1. I’ve already got a folding, bluetooth keyboard. It works for any device and features a kickstand for my phone or tablet, so it’s already miles better than this MS version.

What we REALLY need is a folding bluetooth keyboard with usb mode (for busy bluetooth areas, like airport charging stations), ratcheted stand and a lock when opened (so we can use it on our laps) and built in mousepad (as no one wants to touch the screen while using a mobile device as a “PC”). Logitech needs to get on it.
