Perhaps the world is ready for Indian-made smartphones. Chinese brands have long been busy introducing new devices left and right but we haven’t really turned our attention to those coming from India. As we all know, India is a huge emerging market with potential that big companies are moving to the country to set up shop. One of the most popular Indian retailer is Micromax. It’s the same one that tied up a deal with Cyanogen and broke its agreement with OnePlus.
The brand has its YU subsidiary to deliver new smartphones. The last one we know was the Amazon India exclusive Yu Yureka Plus and the YUphoria phone a few months back. The latter was introduced alongside the YU Fit and Health YU accessories. We also learned the company has been working on its own OS and app suites but we have no idea when they will be ready.
After the Project Caeser, YU is working on a new project called ‘Project Achilles’. Obviously, it’s only a codename but it will be the Yutopia phone. No official announcement has been made yet but a source of BGR said that the phone is set to be the “world’s most powerful smartphone in India”.
That’s such an ambitious claim but these Indians are very well capable of surprising us. The YU Yutopia is expected to be unveiled next month. Others are saying it could also be the YU 5050 earlier benchmarked. It’s not the YU Yunique phone announced but another “beast” as noted by YU founder Rahul Sharma in a tweet. He said, “After the minion monster #YUNIQUE can’t wait to present the #Real Beast. Let the countdown begin”. So the Yunique isn’t the biggest phone yet but this upcoming YU Yutopia.
So far, we know from the benchmark listing that the YU phone will have the following: a 5.2-inch scfreen, 1080p or 2K display, 3GB or 4GB RAM, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 21 megapixel camera, 8MP front-facing cam, and 32GB of built-in storage. No mention on battery size.
Becoming the world’s most powerful smartphone may be quite a challenge but Micromax’s YU knows its capability. This Yutopia will be the first real high-end flagship phone from YU since the previous models released (Yureka, Yuphoria, Yunique, and Yureka Plus) are all mid-range devices (sub Rs 10,000/$200). Let’s just wait and see if this smartphone will really be as powerful as YU claims.
