If you are one of the folks that uses an HTC Desire smartphone and have been longing for an Android update for your device your lucky day is here. An update for Android 2.3 for the Desire is coming your way.

The downside is that the update is still a while away with a date pegged for sometime in Q2. The update is said to come within a month or two of the Desire S hitting stores. The tip comes by way of CNET from MWC.

That Q2 time frame is looking like sometime in June since the launch of the Desire S is expected in April. That is a long time to wait, but at least you now know the update is coming.

  1. I believe it, when I see it. Unfortunately, HTC is quite poor at looking after existing devices. Their objective is growth at the expense of others.

      • Well it took them 10 months to get an update for the Hero. They promised to get Desire HD functions (HTC sense web) by Christmas and still nothing. By the time they pull their finger, we’ll have 2.4, if not 2.5. By which time they’ll scrap the whole idea, as we’ve all upgraded from desire to something newer. Well, i’ll be looking elsewhere, that’s for sure.

      • completely agree. I was expecting the desire HD to get a gingerbread update because it was the flagship device, only to see new devices announced a few months later and talk of updates given some weasel words about Q2; can’t believe i fell for it again. I wish HTC would release stock android for their older phones whilst they are getting sense working with the new updates. They wouldn’t even have to release as on OTA update, just on the website. That way, the people who just use the phones don’t know any different. Those who like to at the cutting edge get to try the new software and later put a sense ROM bacck on. I know I could root my device, but to be honest I want something that works and I don’t want to be part of the end user testing regime that goes with cooked ROMS (no offense to the chefs, just some of us are cautious by nature).

      • Your wrong. They look after their devices. It’s not HTC , its your network provider gives you the OTA update.

      • Look matey, if the cooks on XDA or MoDaCo manage to get updated ROMs within weeks of new android version and HTC takes 6+ months, even for operator free version, then there is something amiss.

Have a look at the fact that some of their new devices are still sporting old android versions, their new tablet for instance. It still features OS fit for a phone and not tablets, with the clock being stretched across a third of the display… All I see is quantity over quality… And with so many devices, I fear that support will drop even further.

      • HTC is to blame, because the providers can not do anything until HTC make the new rom, I had Unbranded HERO, which skipped 1.6, 2.0 and got 2.1 just before 2.2 was released on other devices.
I purchased an Unbranded DesireHD in december, when gingerbread was released with nexus S.

It has been 4 months to this date, and HTCc have not released the 2.3 update, thus until htc realese the update, how can the networks do anything?

Why would they wait 2 months after the release of the new phones to bring 2.3 to Desire HD. well its poor customer serice and greed on the part of HTC, i spent £450 on the desireHD i expect timely update for that money.

The next android is around the corner, and i am sure htc will bring some new phones around that time to.

At least with iphone everyone gets the update at the same time, Android is a great platform, letdown by phone manufactors

  2. You are all missing an important point. It’s not HTC, it’s your provider. If you have a unbranded HTC phone the updates are coming all the time. I have had many OTA updates on my Desire where others with Telus have had just one.

So HTC may release 2.3 in Q2 but you may not see anything until Q4 from your provider or EVER.

    • All we’re missing is HTC being a bit faster. I have de-branded device, rooted and running a custom ROM, because HTC own is slow and buggy. If they were as fast as you suggest, why is it taking till Q2 for Gingerbread? It’s not like they haven’t got devices running 2.3 already.
It’ll be again almost 6 months since 2.3 came out. Now we all know that 2.4 is coming soon….

  3. if everyone in protest, ignor the new HTC handsets, i am sure next time we wont have to wait 6 months+ for updates, any way the new pgones dont improve much on the desire / desire HD, except maybe battery life.

I purchased the desire HD, back in december in the hope o0f it getting the 2.3 update in jan/feb on the flagship handset.

Next time i may try another manufactor or even WP7, at least everyone will be on the same OS… with android we have people still on 1.5, some on 1.6, many on 2.1 and most of the new handsets on 2.2 and nexus s on 2.3. This is madness

I accept that handsets over 2 years should not get updates, but we should not always be running the previous version

  4. HTC Sense means a rebuild of Gingerbread to incorporate the additional functions. So far HTC have been open about how long these changes are taking. It took about 6 months for them to get a stable rebuild for froyo that came as an OTA exactly as they forecast last year

  5. fuck all those estimates.. NOBody KNOWS OKAY STUPID !! Dont be an asshat and belive that shit everybody talks about.

If you ask HTC they for sure says its coming but not WHEN – okay !? Is it so difficult to comprehend?

So relax and enjoy your piece of hardware – upgrades will come .. also before you get 80.
