Project Soli was introduced to us almost a year ago with the intention to apply radar tech to interfacing wearables. We didn’t hear much about it over the last twelve months except in March when a SoliType prototype was shown off. We were treated to a demo of the possibility of typing in the air through radar tech. It seems that the Advanced Technologies and Projects (ATAP) group of Google really knows what they are doing now that the gesture-recognition is once again showed off in a video. This time, the technology is made smaller to fit inside a wearable. The result is the tech actually woking to control and navigate a smartwatch.

Gestures to control a small device such as a smartwatch? Yes, it’s possible with Project Soli. The ATAP group is doing a great job with the project and we have a feeling the technology will quickly advance more than ever. If Apple has a Digital Crown, Google has this Project Soli that has the potential to overtake Apple’s. You see, touch and gestures are becoming more in demand these days. As technology’s goal is to make things easier for us, the Project Soli obviously answers that. There is less need now to touch because small gestures are enough.

Move away the hand from the smartwach and control it. The Soli is one concept that can very well be used in other devices and technologies. The possibilities are endless actually. Right now, Google has decided to work with LG. A smartwatch by the other South Korean tech giant was used and equipped with a Soli sensor. It’s only a prototype but gesture sensor on the wearable is working even without a computer or compatible mobile device.

The Soli is more of a platform now for gesture recognition and sensing with the use of a Google radar. The tech is made smaller to fit a smartwatch. The device demoed isn’t ready yet for public release but expect Google and LG to announced a working product ready for commercial use, hopefully, in the next few months.
