Motorola Android 5.1 Lollipop

Android 5.1 Lollipop has arrived for several Motorola phones.  Moto phones getting the latest Android update isn’t surprising since it was the Motorola Moto G to first officially get Android 5.0 when the version was first launched last year. More Motorola phones went ahead of models from other manufacturers in receiving Lollipop and from Android 5.0, Moto phones are now being prepped to get Android 5.1 from KitKat, as well as from Android 5.0.

Four new phones are ready to be updated to Android 5.1: AT&T Moto X (2nd generation), T-Mobile Moto X (2nd-gen), Moto X (1st-gen), and the Moto E (2nd-gen). If you own any of the smartphones mentioned above, you should be receiving Over-The-Air (OTA) notifications in the coming days or you can manually check your settings for software update.

Android 5.1 will bring a number of usability improvements on the Notifications and Interruptions features. You can now block interruptions until the next alarm you’ve set. Even if you choose ‘No interruptions’, you still won’t be able to miss an important alarm. With the update, you can also choose to enter a scheduled downtime early.

Some icons to the volume settings panel have been added to match those icons that show in the status bar like None and Priority. Feel free to change notification volume controls while media is playing.

Heads-up notifications can now be dismissed to be deleted from the screen by simply swiping up. A new pull-down menu on each tile will also show to easily select different paired Bluetooth devices or WiFi access points. Or if you want to hide features like “Hotspot” or “Invert Colors”, you can do so by long-pressing on the tile.

For security purposes, enable Device Protection by setting a PIN or pattern screen lock. A stolen or lost phone will remain locked until the correct Google account is used.

As expected, the Android 5.1 Lollipop release also brings a number of fixes on errors including incorrect default APN, CPU wake locks that contribute to heavier battery drain, Bluetooth discovery not triggered when you refresh settings, WiFi not connecting after being idle all night, and frequent restarts while watching Netflix.

Android 5.1 Lollipop is said to provide better control over notifications and improve stability of phone performance. According to Motorola, it is the most significant in recent Android history, enhancing experience in many levels like interaction with the device and visual style. To ensure a successful Android 5.1 installation, do the update when battery is at least 50% and phone is connected to a stable WiFi network.
