We were just hanging out like hooligans at a Verizon store today when we decided to inquire about a particular phone on the horizon: the Motorola Droid Bionic. This is a phone with 512MB of RAM, a dual-core processor [UPDATE: NVIDIA Tegra 2!], and wouldn’t you know it – 4G LTE speed. As it turns out, the folks at Verizon were more than willing to hand us over a bit of info on this phone, most of it we already knew, but let slip a rather important point of interest: the release date.

While they didn’t get TOO specific as they weren’t 100% sure, they did, these Verizon people, tell us that the phone would be released somewhere around mid-April. This is a phone that’s got a front and rear-facing camera, the read totaling up to 8 megapixels of fury, with a 4.3-inch qHD touchscreen display up front. And it’s connected to the network’s 4G LTE network, the one we’re all freaking out over with the ThunderBolt. Will this phone leave the ThunderBolt obsolete instantly?

Perhaps. But there are those who still prefer HTC over Motorola. Why? Heck, I don’t know. The fact that it’s got the built-in ability to silence calls by flipping on its face is enough to keep this dude on HTC. But who knows? I and we do LOVE the XOOM tablet, and the ATRIX 4G has that lovely webtop app that we know the Droid Bionic will also be getting, so perhaps there’s hope after all? Let’s look at the press pics together and think about our decisions we’ve made in life:

    • So far I love my TB, but there were some issues that I heard the reps talking about and they showed me an internal email that was sent out around 10 AM EST on Thursday that warned against dialing *228 on the TB. For those that don’t know, dialing *228 on Verizon phones is usually how phones are activated and how you “update your roaming capabilities”. However when you try it after initial activation on the TB, it somehow screws up the 4G Simm card and the card has to be thrown away and replaced. So in other words…..DON’T DIAL *228!! Also they said you will no longer need to update the roaming capabilities as with the 4G network (and even when you aren’t getting a 4G signal) will update itself periodically on the phone.

  1. I prefer HTC over Moto and will never buy a Moto device again. I don’t care if its quad core. The reason is that I’m a ROM flasher and with Moto’s locked bootloaders the phone is very limited on what ROMS could be created or ported to a Moto device. I love my HTC Thunderbolt. The Bionic is not for me. If you don’t root, flash ROMS and like blur, the Bionic is the phone for you.

    • With the concerns about battery life on the TB, I’m willing to wait a while longer to see if Motorola reverses it’s decision on the locked bootloader. If not, hopefully the TB’s battery issues will be fixed and/or a custom ROM will be released to address the issue. Besides, with a overclocked Droid running Gingerbread, TB is at best a lateral move aside from the LTE goodness!

      • The battery life is an issue. Not for me because I bought 2 lol. I highly doubt the Bionic bootloader is unlockable but if im wrong I’ll pick one up. I understand what you’re saying about the Droid but Slayer is already working on CM7 Gingerbread for the Thunderbolt. My quadrant score out the box was 2000 so Thunderbolt + root + Overclocked + CM7 and custom kernel for the battery will out perform the Droid.

      • Its coming!!!! Might take a little longer due to getting the 4G to work. I talk with Slayer not to long ago and he got the phone on release date.

      • It won’t outperform the Bionic. Your Quandrant score is no longer valid with most custom ROMs. They do little hacks that fake out the synthetic benchmarks (like the filesystem hack) but offer little real performance. Not saying it won’t be a very fast phone, but you’re comparing apples to oranges at that point.

The TB is a Qualcomm chip right? I can’t believe people are still buying Snapdragon-chipped phones. That Adreno GPU is a joke in the mobile development world. The original Droid’s PowerVR SGX535 is quite a bit faster (and that phone has been out for around 1.5 years).

      • Good points but to be honest, nothing you say matters to me. There is only a couple of factors that matter to me, my bootloader is not locked, 2.2 and 2.3 are not utilized for dual core right now, I hate the Atrix (its still laggy and found the Inspire to run better). I hated my Droid X limitations with the bootloader. While I was stuck on 2.2 my friend has 2.3 on his Incredible and another alpha testing 3.0.

Don’t care if Moto released a quad core phone tomorrow. I won’t even consider buying it unless its unlocked. All the dual core love I need is in my Xoom. As far as the snapdragon goes, its still a good processor. No complaint here. It’s not what’s under the hood, its how it runs. All personal preference by the way.

      • That’s too bad because one spec people have been overlooking on the Bionic is the battery. That 1930 mAh battery is going to leave the competition behind and what an Android phone should have. Combined with fairly efficient dual core procs and 4G LTE, the Bionic is gonna smoke the TBolt. You can flash roms and kernels till your heart’s content and the Bionic is still gonna have it for lunch with its stock rom. Just sayin. As someone with an OG Droid running Gingerbread on a custom rom I can say flashing is a cool ability, but there are minuses to flashing all the time and having a rom release force you back because of stupid things not working. As an OG Droid owner, I also *more than anything* want a processor that is going to kick tail for a while without having to be OC’d. It will be just nice not to have to f with it just to get performance….

      • I completely agree, further the Bionic looks like it will come with a black status bar. Besides the framework, you can change the look of the launchers and wallpaper. I use LPP but the new ADW allows you to change the icons in the drawer now. I heard the blurr is not as bad as it was.

      • They fixed the battery issue with a Radio firmware flash just before release.

It still isn’t the best. But just as good as an EVO today.

  3. The tech folks at the Verizon store showed me, confidentially, a memo from Verizon warning about a problem with the SIMM card on the Thunderbolt……

  4. I find this simply astounding. First Verizon can’t get the ThunderBolt out by what is now known as their “internal” date of 2/14 and then the Bionic was supposed to be June and now its April. You just have to wonder.

  5. I messed around with a TB yesterday. Wasn’t impressed. I do so much emailing, I may just have to wait for Verizon to come to market with a good slider. Not sure what the hangup is with this. If the Bionic has better touch typing and voice recognition, I’ll go with that, and heck, just the addition of the HDMI out is a big selling point for me.

    • Lol don’t hate on us techies because we like to better our phone experiences. You’re just mad cause you don’t know how to do it…. douchebag

    • Lol don’t hate on us techies because we like to better our phone experiences. You’re just mad cause you don’t know how to do it…. douchebag

    • Keithharmon417…..really? Why the rant? With the cost of phones and new ones coming out daily with some getting this update others not….you have to do your homework! Techies give out good info so u can have informed consumers. Btw….why were u on this page, reading the article? Keith are you a douchebag too, but in denial? Knowledge is power….get some!!!

    • I have but 1 question for you sir. Why in God’s name would you go onto the website ANDROIDCOMMUNITY.COM. and expect the threads not to be filled to the brim with Techies? That’d like going onto ESPN.com’s SportsCenter section of their website, going onto their likely nonexistant threads and saying, “wow, you jocks are such assholes, its just a guy catching a ball and running with it!”
You are by far the dumbest human being ever to walk, you disgrace your computer and should put it out of it’s misery asap, i’d suggest purchasing a helmet as soon as possible because i can’t think of anyone who needs it more.

  6. people like htc over moto for a simple reason. Freedom. Since moto starting locking down the bootloader on phones and making it rough on the dev community to produces roms for their devices more and more people whose interest lies not only in an epic phone but control over its customization will migrate to a company that gives them that option. which right now Moto isn’t doing

  7. “The fact that it’s got the built-in ability to silence calls by flipping on its face is enough to keep this dude on HTC.”

My Samsung Omnia with Windows Mobile 6.1 that was released, like, 2 years ago has that feature and I turned it off…

    Not a big deal.

  8. Ummm people still believe Verizon reps? Lol. This post is worthless. Also who said the bionic was getting webtop? With half a gig of ram it can’t support it. Motorola announced all high end Motorola phones coming out after June get webtop. Not before.

  9. IT IS BLOGS LIKE THIS THAT BENEFIT FROM B.S. RUMORS!!!

They want to get another round of rumored release dates like the Thunderbolt.

Yeah, the TB was delayed… but Verizon never officially announced a date. It was this Blogging community that kept saying date after date… based on rumors they got from misinformed, low level employees from VWZ and BestBuy.

Don’t expect the Bionic for a while. Otherwise, you will get frustrated! And everybody will get so pissed off, they will start shouting, “Just wait, the HTC Pyramid is coming soon.”

Because there will ALWAYS be a better phone just over the horizon.

    • So now other tech blogs are regurgitating the same report of a mid-April release.

      *sigh*

But they are all quoting androidcommunity as their source…
And Android Community does not have a valid source for this information. Have we learned nothing from the Thunderbolt debacle?

Yeah, they learned that they can sell a lot more ads space on this blog by perpetuating rumors that are bound to leave users frustrated and hanging around this website for more misinformation.

  10. What I REALLY need is a DROID that has infrared capabilities. Are any of the new phones that are soon to be released going to have that capability? The only DROID I know that currently does is the DROID X and I don’t want to purchase something out of date! If anyone can shed light, please do so! Thanks so much!

    • I don’t think infrared is going to be in smartphones in the future. The require significant internal space in the phone (since they don’t downsize well)… and can handle only limited amounts of data throughput.

Bluetooth is the preferred method now. No line of sight needed. Can handle more data. Wider support of devices. Even newer TVs have Bluetooth remote control capability.

  11. Well i have read this whole page trying to figure out if i want a TB or wait for the Bionic as i’m a Droid x user now. a lot of arguing over techies which i’m not but i sure like getting info even if i don’t understand it. Question looking at the specs have we decided which one is better, TB or Bionic?? help the non tech high tech cell phones lovers

    • If you do upgrade to the bionic will you sell me your droid-x??? I owned one previously but it was stolen after only 6 months into my new 2 year contract. I had no insurance so now my only choices involve spending $400 or more to get a new one.

BTW how are you able to upgrade already? If you have a droid-x that means you have only had your phone for a year or so. Are you really gonna pay full price for a bionic?

      • Yeah I have only had mine for a year, but selling the X and paying full price for the bionic is about the same as the discount price.

His word choice is poor and is probably one of those losers tryin to write reviews and articles for engadgets job search…just made this up to have some material and look relevant.

    • Dude, come on, what are you an english major? who gives a shit about word choice? And what do you mean you don;t believe this article? if nothing else it’s simply another persons opinion, this is android community, meaning your not going to get legit published works, you are going to get discussions and some valuable info you wouldn’t necessarily get on a legit published work. Give the guy a break, he threw up some nice pictures and gave a general description of the phones specs. i thought it was exactly what it’s supposed to be; a couple of paragraphs to start a discussion and get opinions of others

  16. Let’s clarify here. VERIZON did not say the phone was coming out in April. Some random VERIZON STORE EMPLOYEES said the phone was coming out in April. There’s a HUGE difference.

  19. even if its true that it comes out in April, there is no garantee it will have an unlimited data plan. VZW has announced that it will be going byebye. That is why I pulled the trigger early and went with the Tbolt.

    • Everyone should just BOYCOTT VERIZON FOR LIES, PRICE INCREASES, and IT’S ALL ABOUT PROFIT TREATMENT OF CONSUMERS.

      1. Verizon PROMISED and stated by their CEO that smart phones would not go over $199.00 on a 2 year upgrade. New phones now up to $299.00. A VERIZON LIE!!!

      2. Verizon told new customers when they signed up that they would get the new every 2 plan as long as they were customers. NOW VERIZON TAKES THAT AWAY, AND IN THEIR OWN WORDS, TO INCREASE PROFITS. Another Verizon Lie.

      3. Verizon only offers customers one unlimited data plan, even to those that use very little data. THIS MEANS VERIZON CUSTOMERS THAT USE LITTLE DATA *** PAY *** FOR HEAVY USERS. Verizon did this in an effort to draw AT&T customers to Verizon. BUT THEY ARE WILLING TO SCREW EXISTING VERIZON CUSTOMERS TO DO THIS.

      4. Verizon has LIED TO ITS CUSTOMERS ON A REGULAR BASIS. Promises made and broken. CUSTOMERS SERVICE LEVELS HAVE STEADILY DROPPED OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS FOR THE SAKE OF INCREASING PROFITS. I have been a customer over 10 Years and watched more and more of their Customer Service taken away to increase PROFITS.

Bottom line, I have both Verizon and AT&T service and VERIZON HAS GONE FROM THE SERVICE PROVIDER YOU WANT TO THE CELL PHONE PROVIDER YOU SHOULD RUN FROM.

AT&T now beats Verizon on all levels of customer service and pricing.

SEND A MESSAGE TO VERIZON AND WHEN YOUR NEXT CONTRACT IS UP, SWITCH TO ANOTHER PROVIDER.

      • LMAO @ JOE BLOWN…..do your research before looking dumb on here!!!
        1 – I can get the Thunderbolt for $199.00
2 – the above price is with my NEW EVERY 2 and its actually only 18 months into it!!
3 – again Im an existing customer and got offered the unlimited on my Droid 1

      • They would go out of business if they didn’t make a profit. Your the kind of person who destroys businesses because you expect the world for free. Verizon has never lied to me and if you are an educated consumer then you can get pretty good deals on anything, (including cell phones) nothing you said has any credibility.

      • I have never had an issue with Verizon, and i have gotten every smartphone for $199.99 or cheapier. Also i have unlimited data i have gone over 5g and never been charged extra. So do some more research. Also at&t have the worst coverage, i have never lost connection with Verizon.

      • Verizon has provided our family the best coverage, the best customer service, and the best rates by far. Have never had them lie to me in any way. I have never had AT&T but have several friends who left A&T for Verizon due to high rates, poor coverage, and poor customer service. No one is making you buy there phones or pay more than $200, you can always get the cheap free phones. This is America and I am getting really sick of people blaming the corporations, CEO’s, and etc for making money. People kill and die to get to America in hopes of the American dream fro themselves and their families. Part of the dream is being successful and making money, not sure why you are so upset they are a successful company.

      • Steve you are a fucking moron. This isn’t the “land of the free home of the brave” anymore. It’s about dog-eat-dog screwing the next guy for a bigger piece of the pie. Get with the program and WAKE UP. You are being lied to by corporations and your government every day and they will continue to do so as long as pussy ass submissive fucks like you support them

      • yep, this is America. You either survive or you get buried. ***NOT complaining, just how I think it is… (is it bad?) NO. If you are a survivor. But then again why would people be complaining HERE if that was the case???

      • shut the fuck up, stop trolling about verizon for the following reasons
        A) Your argument, although valid, is not about the Droid Bionic
        B) I agree with you, Verizon has kind of turned into a pissy bitch, but clearly they can get away with it, they’re not losing their customer basis at all because they have the largest network in the country. I have had an iphone and it would drop calls left and right, I’d estimate dropping a call 25% of the time, whereas with verizon its closer to 5%. On top of that, they managed to turn not having anything to do with apple(until recently) working for them. All of the anti-apple fanboys are on Verizon for sure because they’ll take Android over Apple anyday, regardless the price. Any self respecting nerd(such as myself) is not going to want anything to do with the iphone because they are PC all the way everytime, and when it comes to smartphones the nerd market is huge, they are going to be seen with something like a Droid Bionic for example

      • do you work for AT&T Joe? You sound like a whiny little girl. Until the iPhone, all it’s phones were under $200……you wanna know the reason why? Steve Jobs. Apple sets uniform prices across the board for it’s products no matter where you get it, so guess what, it’s Apple, Not Verizon.

2.) Customer’s who signed the contract before the New every 2 was taken away are still entitled to their discount when their contract is up. Even so, there is still a $450 difference in price on the iPhone if your upgrade ready vs. not, so an extra $50 isn’t going to make a huge difference.

3.) The unlimited data is a must. Verizon experimented with a $15/ 150mb plan for like 2 months and then discontinued it b/c customers blew threw that amount of data and were paying huge overages. So rather than try to “get as much profit as possible” ended that program and charged a flat fee.

4.) Customer service is 10x worse at ATT than Verizon. I had ATT with my old job and whenever I had a problem with my phone, the friendly ATT store employees looked at me like I was an idiot and basically said that’s what you get for not having an iPhone…..which that and the ability to talk and surf the web at the same time was the only competitive advantage they had over Verizon, which coincidentally is now being squashed by Verizon’s LTE Network……speaking of which, if you want to see a great video do a google search for 3G iPhone beats ATT 4G phone in speed. It’s a doozy.

5.) Listen to Joe Blow if you want to get ATT service only to return all phones within 30 days and go back to Verizon. I had both phones at one point with my old job……an ATT Blackberry (keep in mind Blackberry’s have awesome antenna’s) and an old ass LG EnV on Verizon. Guess which phone I used more often to make calls b/c I could never get a signal with the Blackberry? Finally, as far as Data goes…..when I went home to Cleveland for Christmas, I lived in a huge suburb of 50,000 people 20 miles from downtown Cleveland yet only connected to ATT’s shitty ass EDGE network when and if I had service in my house.

In summary Joe, since you decided to offer no insight whatsoever about the Bionic, I have done the same and instead squashed any valid point you ever thought you had about ATT vs. Verizon. There is a reason why ATT continually gets ranked dead last in overall quality across the board. (ie., customer service, network coverage, etc.)

I just feel bad for T-Mobile customers now that ATT bought them out. They are going from a company with bad service but dirt cheap prices to a company with even worse network service yet way more expensive plans. At least T-Mobile’s cheap prices made their lack of network coverage somewhat bearable.

      • don’t be stupid. The only reason verizon offer the 15/150MB per month was to get as much people as possible to UPGRADE phones before the iPhone became available. After that well… ATT was already charging the same amount for 2GB. So verizon decided that people NEEDED unlimited data plans. (although I’m pretty sure there are folks that CAN manage how much data they use***)

      • One other thing Joe…..in response to LMAO @JB he is completely correct. If you do your research as a consumer you will find out that Verizon offers more discounts than any other company. Lowe’s, Home Depot, Boeing, Ford, etc. employees all get like a 22% monthly discount off of their plans.

      • but military gets 15% discount on verizon. How can they give Home Depot employees a better discount than the men and women who fight for our freedom

      • Thanks Joe. This is absolutely shocking. I did a little research and it appears as though this is the first time in recorded history that a corporation has not been totally 100% transparent and honest. In my opinion, any corporation that tells you they are doing something specifically for profit cannot be trusted, as we all know the purpose of corporations is to make society and the environment pure beauty and bliss. And I’m sure AT&T would never mislead anyone.

  20. here is verizons answer as of 3-21-11
    Good Afternoon Mr. Martin,
Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. My name is Rigena and I have received your email in regards to pre ordering the Mortorla Bionic and a release date for the device and I will be happy to assist you today. I can understand that you want to have a handset that you have seen or heard about.
Unfortunately, Verizon Wireless does not provide information regarding which equipment is being considered or approximate release dates, as this may raise expectations that may not be met. I do not have any information on the device and if we will carry the device in our line up. We have several new devices that have been introduced as of recently and you may find a device that will suit your needs.

  21. Just called Wireless Advocates (1-888-369-5931) (Costco’s partner) and asked for any 4G devices for Verizon that will be available in next few months. She looked up the system and couldn’t find any 4G phones. But she did go down a list of soon-to-be-available phones and Bionic was on there. It will be available at Costco on May 12th!

  22. To the idiot bitching about Verizon lying: switch to AT&T and stoop crying. I like Verizon. So they made some changes. So? It won’t stop me from getting the Bionic. And in case you hadn’t noticed, they’re a BUSINESS so of course they’re going to do things for PROFIT. Silly rabbit.

  23. CSR at retail stores are worse than clueless. Heck somtimes they’ll say “yes we have the Bionic available right now, I’ll go get one…” *comes back with DroidX*

    • Im not sure what the deal is with that, as a VZW employee we were told November. I have a Fascinate also so Im not b.s.ing you. Its freaking April already and both the Fascinate and Continuum are about to go away judging on pricing and accessories and stock levels. I will never get another Samsung phone because of this. Luckily that is my business line and I will be getting the Bionic for my personal line.

  24. People prefer HTC over moto because sense is 10000000 times better than blur, and moto has locked bootloaders and e-fuses that make rooting very difficult.

  25. i heard from a verizon girl today over the phone that she is waiting for the bionic to. and thinks they wont she it until june or july.

      • Oh my gosh, if it comes out that day I’m getting 2. Ha ha. Seriously though where did you hear that release date? I’m upgrading 3 days after that date and I’d love to be able to get it. Since I hear the droid X has reached EOL. 🙁

  26. I really hope that this phone comes out in mid April! I’m going to attend a concert April 27th and I want to cancel tmo and switch to verizon and purchase the bionic! I hope this april release rumor is true!!!!!

  27. Jezuz…..whiny litle geek-ass bitches…….its an f-ing PHONE for #$%& sake……wait two weeks and another one will come out that you can root, or plant, or dig, or Jack, or hack, or whatever your geek asses call it these days…….get over it already…….NO ONE CARES about your opinion…..the masses are gonna buy what they want to buy and that’s it……the main problem with internet and “forums” these days is people think that everyone is gonna give 2 sh%ts about what they type and therefore they keep right on running their fingers, typing away…..kinda like this rant…….shut the $%&* up and get over it

  28. The dingbats talking to Verizon store employees to get information on release dates are hilarious. Verizon W’s website says it employs 82,000 employees in over 2,000 stores in all 50 states. Are all 82,000 of them keeping a secret from the rest of the world? Absurd. Verizon store employees speculate on release dates just like everyone else. Store managers learn of the actual release date from upper management one to two days before sales are allowed to begin.

      • So I hear. I was at the Northgate Mall in Seattle. I asked the Verizon salesmen if he had any info on the Droid Bionic. He replied that the phone was canceled and that I should purchase the HTC Thunderbolt if I wanted a 4g phone. I told him I had read differently on the web and that I was holding out for the Motorola Bionic. He then tried to grill me on why I was determined to buy the Bionic. I walked away. This guy was a real ass and a terrible example of Verizon customer service.

      • Yup you are right. I had the same experience. I was like I am here to buy apples and you are trying to sell me bananas. Do you know that they are two completely different things and he was like no, they are the same….And i was like what?? I just had to walk out of the store. I just had to….

    • Wow! You must be VERY intelligent. I am very impressed with your ability to deduce this tasty little tidbit. Absurd! I wish you were my best friend then I would be smart too!!

    • You’re right. I was going to buy a new Droid X and got the low down about the Bionic. Glad he was honest. I could have easily been screwed over when I have a free update to do.

    • from what iv been hearing and seeing it should be out on the 12 of may so you should be good to go . lol but thats just what i hear again who knows ,

  29. Will the Bionic have the swype ability like the Droid X? It looks like none of the other phones have it including the Thunderbolt!

  30. was wondering if someone could explain to me what boot loader is and does with a phone , sorry for this stupid question but im not familar with that at all .i will be getting the bionic cause of its features and knowing that it is 4g , i have heard that its suppose to be coming out between the 15- 20th of April Costco is scheduled to get the phone on the 15 , sorry again for the stupid question but i would like to know more about Boot loader cause i dont know what that is , Yes Bionic is suppose to have a sim card cause Verizon is suppose to go Sim with all their new phones. Thank you for all your Replys ,

    • Look! It’s nearly September and the phone still isn’t out! But a TOTES S33KRT source in the Verizon store told me it was coming out in April!

When will we learn that release dates mean nothing until the carrier makes them official?

  31. A Duel core (1g each core) Phone with only 512 RAM ?  To me, it seems a big mistake to launch this phone without upgrading to 1g of RAM.  I may be confused about how the “Duel Core” works. Because of the new parameters, it may not put as much of a demand on RAM.  It may only put 25% of the normal demand on RAM.   Can anyone clear this up for me ?
