The Google Assistant is one feature from the tech giant that will receive a number of major changes and improvements. With over 500 million devices already powered by the voice assistant, Google is responsible to improve the platform. Apart from the smartphones and smart devices, the Google Assistant is available on Wear OS and just recently, for Smart Displays. At the I/O 2018, more related information and details were shared with the public. If you may remember, some Smart Displays were announced including the Lenovo Smart Display, ARCHOS Hello, and the LG ThinQ (WK9).
Those smart displays are powered by the Google Assistant and offer a small screen that functions as a smart display. They can be likened to the Alexa-powered Echo Show by Amazon. These smart displays bring the Google Assistant into our home life. It’s basically a Google Home device with a screen where you can quickly watch a YouTube TV or other video content from different sources.
If you’ve been following the Google I/O event, you may have already seen the first demo of a smart display being asked to turn to ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ on YouTube TV. The Google Assistant was then requested to look for more, check Google Maps, and then make a video call.
As with any other Google Assistant smart device, the Smart Display can understand the same voice commands and actions. It connects with other smart home products and can understand most questions and queries. Simply put, it’s a Google Home with a display–a smart one at that.
More Smart Display devices will be introduced in the coming months by LG, Lenovo, and JBL. They will be considered as Google Smart Displays so let’s wait and see for the special announcement.
