When Nintendo legend and creative director Shigeru Miyamoto appeared on the stage with Tim Cook at the Apple iPhone 7 launch, it was a very big deal indeed. The partnership between the Japanese gaming giant and Apple will bring the Super Mario Run game exclusively first to iPhone and iPad devices before it launches to the larger mobile world. Yesterday, Sony made a similar announcement – it was going to start creating games for mobile as well.
It seems that everybody is jumping on to the mobile gaming bandwagon – the ubiquity of mobile games is just too much for gaming companies to ignore. Sony is entering the mobile gaming market as well, with 10 PlayStation games to be ported to mobile in the pipeline – six of those to be launched in the next fiscal year.
Sony will have an advantage over Nintendo, it seems, because it is choosing to launch lesser known PlayStation titles rather than start from scratch. They will lead with games like music/rhythm game “PaRappa the Rapper” and tactical role-playing game “Arc the Lad.” Sony’s is also targeting the Japan market first – the games will launch for iOS and Android in Japan and other parts of Asia before launching globally.
This makes sense for the Japanese electronics giant, since some of these games are very popular in the Japanese market. We will just have to see what the effect of this will be on the gaming market in general.
