8Bitdo is an outfit pretty popular for their classic style Bluetooth controllers – they have around 8 of them, all in garbs that any 80s or 90s kid would recognize. And in celebration of Apple’s 40th anniversary, the people at 8Bitdo are putting up the AP40 Bluetooth controller up for crowdfunding via Kickstarter.
The AP40 Bluetooth game controller is styled in the look of Apple’s original (and very colorful) logo. There’s even a silicon “leaf” that functions as a cover to the USB port to complete the look. It also comes with a stand in the look of the original Apple II keyboard, which is also usable as a smartphone holder. Pair it with your Android device and you can immediately enjoy retro feels while gaming on your mobile or tablet. Couple the AP40 with 8Bitdo’s Retro Receiver products and you can immediately use this controller with classic SNES and NES consoles.
But the nice homage is this – add a little more to your pledge and you will get a Retro Receiver with a very specific use. You can plug the thingamajig onto an old (and preferably working) Apple IIc and immediately be able to use the AP40 (or any other 8Bitdo gaming controller for that matter) with vintage games on your Apple IIc.
Of course, this will probably be more heart-tugging to those who still own working Apple IIc units. Given that, you can pledge USD$38.00 to either get one unit of the AP40 or one unit of the Retro Receiver for the Apple IIc. Increase your pledge to USD$68.99 and you will get a limited edition AP40 (only 1976 units) plus the nifty stand in limited edition packaging. The top pledge, around USD$85.00 will get you an AP40 unit and a Retro Receiver for the Apple IIc.

This is a crowdfunded project, and as such may not deliver what its creators initially promise. Most crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, have policies about what happens to your money if the project fails to deliver on its goals, but choosing to back a project is inevitably a risk. Android Community’s reporting on crowdfunded projects should in no way be seen as an endorsement, unless specifically stated, and we recommend closely examining the terms and conditions to understand your individual rights as a backer before making a pledge.
