The only solid look we have of the upcoming Huawei Mate S2 is what we’ve seen at China’s TENAA – which is basically their FCC, approving gadgets ready for the market. From experience, once a gadget hits TENAA’s databases, it only takes a few weeks until we see the said device launched in the Chinese market. So it lines up correctly that Huawei has a scheduled press conference on the 1st of September, just one day before IFA 2016 kicks off in Berlin.
If you look at the Huawei Mate S2 images that TENAA gave us, it’s a dead ringer for the Nexus 6P. That’s not surprising at all, given that the Nexus 6P was manufactured also by Huawei in cooperation with Google. We want to get into the specs, but TENAA doesn’t give that kind of data away, unfortunately.
All we have to go on are leaks from the GFXBench database, which were earlier rumored to be the Huawei Mate 9. Official communications from Huawei already quashed those rumors, which means these specs could very well be for the Huawei Mate S2. What we see here is a 5.9-inch FullHD (1080p) display, very much in keeping with the phablet size of the Nexus 6P. That is powered by a Kirin 960 octa-core chipset clocked at 2.6GHz accompanied by Mali T880 GPU. That will be supported by 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.
On the camera side, there will be at least a 12MP/8MP camera combo, although there’s none of that dual-lens trend going around here. The pricing is rumored to be a little over USD$500, considering the Huawei Mate S last year which this will be an upgrade from. September 1 is not too far away, so we’ll wait for when this interesting new device gets officially unveiled.
