The idea of smart contact lenses is nothing new. We first heard about a pair of Google smart contact lens back in 2014 that gives diabetics a less painful glucose monitor. Last year, we learned about Google’s next attempt to get iris fingerprint through contact lens patent and then another patent that made us say that smart contact lenses and teeth may be coming our way soon. This time, we’re hearing from Samsung about its plan for smart contact lenses.
Samsung didn’t exactly make an announcement but a patent application filed in South Korea was published online. The document tells us of a concept contact lens with a small display and equipped with a camera, antenna, and different sensors. The sensors are supposed to detect simple movements and input like blinking.
The idea is for the contact lens to project images on the tiny display. Imagine viewing a small computer directly in your eye. Just like any smart device or wearable, the lens would need an external device. It could be a smartphone, tablet, or a computer.
The patent application explains the idea of augmented reality being delivered in a natural way compared to smart glasses. It can be an exciting technology but there is still the issue of privacy. A camera on a contact lens can be considered a hidden camera already which is an invasion of privacy.
So far, we only know of Samsung and Google working on the idea of smart contact lenses. We’re not even sure if the project will become a reality but you know, anything is possible in this day and age. It’s only a matter of time.
