So here we’ve got quite an interesting situation – our pals over at SentNation have had a conversation with their Verizon Wireless contact who has not only all but guaranteed a March 10th release date for the HTC ThunderBolt, they’ve noted threats from HTC deciding the fate of advertisements for the phone and possible consequences for Verizon if they did not release the phone soon! In all, the most important thing to take away from the conversation had between this publisher and their Verizon source is that tensions are running high, but it’ll mean a solid release date for everyone who’s been chomping at the bit since the first time they saw the lightening strike.

As our pal from SentNation, Alex, began his conversation, obviously digital and having taken place yesterday in the afternoon, by asking when the ThunderBolt will be released – to which he received the reply “no dice.” Not satisfied with a silly noncommittal answer such as this, Alex pressed on for the greater good of ThunderBolt awaiters everywhere.

Me (7:04 PM): What’s up? Not happening today?

Source (9:51 PM): Things are being finalized. We’re shipping to stores tomorrow which is ahead of schedule. [HTC] wanted it announced days ago. I think either tomorrow or Monday/tues we’ll go public with the news. Phone’s been ready forever

Me (10:00 PM): Sounds like hell. March 10 still?

Source (10:10 PM): 10th is right. Just got off a conference call with [Some partner] things are getting chippy around here. Someone’s more impatient than you — We heard HTC threatened to pull all its ads if we don’t announce a date before Saturday

Me (10:14 PM): Holy ****. Think it’ll be announced soon then?
Source (10:27 PM): I hope so I don’t need that ****

If the unlikely situation above is true, it means terrible things for Verizon. Even if they deliver the phone on the 10th, they now owe HTC a set of explanations for why they’ve not delivered this phone that’s very obviously sought after hardcore by the Android community on time – or perhaps that’s the point? Have a peek at our top posts for today, and not that these aren’t just posts posted today, they’re the most visited posts in our entire archive today —

The ThunderBolt, this phone being the first 4G LTE phone on Verizon’s powerful network, is sure to be a hit – we’ve held it in our hands and from what we can tell, it’ll have been worth the wait. If you’d like to know everything there is to know about this lovely phone head over to the [HTC ThunderBolt] portal and take a look around. No umbrellas!

  1. Sounds like Verizon has been dragging their feet on the Thunderbolt release.I think the soft iPhone sales is the reason for this.Looks like we’ll finally get our hands on it next week..i hope.

    • I have been waiting for this for since we saw the first leaked images as the incredible hd back in Nov, I think. Well I lost my patience waiting and ended up with the iPhone 4, of which was not something I really was cravin. I have had the iPhone for 6 days now and I absolutely love it. The OS is smooth as silk and the retina display blows me away. Sorry htc but I will be keeping this iPhone even if the thunderbolt is released within my 14 day return window. Well maybe I go check out the thunderbolt but I really don’t expect it to beat the iPhone.

      • if you already have the iphone then why are you on here? go hangout at starbucks with your apple logo showing so everyone can see it

      • The point of my story was that due to the delays of the thunderbolt, Verizon has lost a customer and I am sure I was not the only one. By the time this phone becomes released, dual core phones will be out shortly. Now I know the iPhone is old, I
And the tbolt has newer technology but I am sick of all these unofficial delays. That’s just my view on the whole thing. you should bash a man for his opinion. Peace bother, enjoy the bolt!

      • you would actually leave over a phone? my family is on att and they cant stand them. I have a droid x and cant stand it but I wouldn’t leave over it. No matter what a company does someone is always going to complain and stomp their feet, even if the company is trying their best. It goes to show everyone that there is no patience anymore.

    • Hype is a products best friend. Every bit of info that has been out on this phone has been rumor. Htc and Verizon have both said nada about the release date. Its all been coming from folks with these “inside connections”, tweets, facebook or youtube. Leaked info here and there.

I have been looking for this phone since November. I too am excited about this phone. However, I get the fact that the Iphone has taken top priority with Vzw. The Tbolt will sell very well to the Android community. Vzw knows this and can give a sh.#$ about all the bad threads and posts. All it is doing is giving more hype to the Tbolt.

Congratz Vzw for creating so much excitement and drama over a phone!

      • Jay speaks the truth~

It has been entertaining to see how riled up some have gotten over something they have no control over.
Alas, we may have to wait a little longer…

      • While your statement may be valid on the simplest of terms, I’d have to chime in that circulated news that is negative on a product never equates to good publicity. Verizon dragging their feet may get tons of sites to report on it, but the average consumer, especially in today’s age, will just move on to something else. Technology moves fast and with a bigger, better devices around the corner I highly doubt this can be advantages to the Thunderbolts lifespan or integrity or even the companies associated with it. The lose in sales to these delays will cost more units not being sold versus built-up “excitement and drama” that you praise.

      • I have to agree… Had the phone come out a week ago I would had bought it, but now because I got tired of waiting I got another phone.. I was also told by a best buy employee not to buy the Thunderbolt because they were told the reason for the delay was not only battery problems but processor problems as well… For the them to tell me outright not to buy it sets off alarms for me.. I think I will wait for the better stuff around the corner that will work the right way when I get it instead of sending it back again and again for problems that they are still working on.

      • WRONG. Webmercial in Spanish language clearly said “Febrero” at the end. So, yes, VZW DID post a date. It’s not Febrero anymore, dude.

    • Frankly, my Verizon 3g service has been poor since the Dec 5th LTE launch. Prior to that, I could launch iheartradio on my Droid at will and have a perfect stream. Now, I lose signal entirely or have fallback to 1x very often. Streaming audio service is useless. I can use my Droid for e-mail and web since the seamless streaming isn’t an issue. I also have a mifi2200. Crappy service on that as well. I wouldn’t buy an iPhone on Verizon with the crappy state of their 3g in San Diego. Others with Blackberry phones on Verizon also report problems with 3g streams. Verizon did the customer base a big disservice in damaging the 3g network quality to push LTE for a few football fans. I definitely feel ripped off as a paying 3g customer with both a Droid and mifi2200. I’m hoping LTE will be a solution, but not yet. I need an LTEWiFi device to service my Linux and Windows devices. Currently LTE modems don’t officially support Linux.

      • I live about an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Florida (southwest). I just got a Verizon iPhone 4 and i live where there is fields full of cows and etc. I haven’t gotten lower than 2 bars of signal and have never lost a 3G signal. I only returned my iPhone 4 because I’m waiting for the HTC Thunderbolt.

  3. The phone is a non-working TB demo all stores have. Vz can’t release a phone on a 4G phone network that doesn’t work yet. Their stock is going to take a dive very soon because word is getting out that Vz is not as great as they claim and stock holders are realizing how far behind the curve they are being the only major carrier without 4G phones. When Vz has to admit a drop in subscribers as users go to the 3 other 4G carriers their stock will plummet. you watch!!!!

    • You’re a retard, you know that?
Let me address you point by point.
#1, “Vz can’t release a phone on a 4G phone network that doesn’t work yet.”
Verizon has 4G modems out, which means their 4G network is active.
#2, ” Their stock is going to take a dive very soon because word is getting out that Vz is not as great as they claim and stock holders are realizing how far behind the curve they are being the only major carrier without 4G phones.”
I really doubt that their stock will take a dive, and Verizon is also using a different form of 4G, called LTE. Sprint uses WiMax, and AT&T and T-Mobile use HSPA+, which technically is just an upgrade to a 3G network. LTE is faster than both of these. You could also argue none of these are 4G services.
#3, “When Vz has to admit a drop in subscribers as users go to the 3 other 4G carriers their stock will plummet. you watch!!!!”
I doubt that will happen, VZW customers tend to suffer through because of how good the network is. And what is with you and their stock!?

      • I can agree on your #1 comment here. I’ve been running on Vz’s 4G wireless USB modem for my computer and it’s been freaking awesome. Just as fast as the wifi in my home through the broadband connection.

    • “the only major carrier without 4G phones.”

The way I see it that Verizon will be the FIRST carrier in the US with a 4G phone when this thing lands. The 4G network is functional because I have a Verizon 4G modem.

AT&T and Tmobile DO NOT HAVE a 4g network, at all. they are still in the building and testing phases. What they did was rename their 3G network and launched commercials to convince morons like you into thinking that they do. As for Sprint, their 4G is MIA. My boss and I had HTC Evo’s about a month ago. I personally never got a 4G signal. I live and work in NYC. My boss said he got it a couple of times in the 5 months that he had it.

4G is not only about download and upload speeds. it is also about reliability. The problem with AT&T’s and T mobile’s networks are huge latencies. upwards of 300ms and sometimes as much 1000ms. LTE has a much lower latency and because it operates at much lower frequency (700mz), it penetrates walls better giving you a better signal.

Verizon is way ahead of the curve. Their stock will be fine.

  4. The longer Verizon waits to release this phone better phones are being manufactured as we speak and the Thunderbolt will be obsolete!

    • Your position is ludicrous. A phone is not made obsolete in a matter of weeks. In reality, phones suffer these types of “delays” all the time…they just don’t all have a legion of idiots sweating over their release and buying into a bunch of false rumors.

      • I actually agree that these rumors are a bit stupid and all, and I don’t consider it really a delay…. except…. I’m now sitting here hearing things about battery life, and this/that/the other thing. It may seem stupid but having heard all this I really don’t want to buy the phone when its released at least for a week or 2 until I can see reviews etc. Tack on the “delay” and my wait time and suddenly we’re at least a month and a half closer to the bionic which really does make me wonder if I shouldn’t wait and see what that pricing, or those reviews are like. Closer to the iphone 5 (whenever that may come out) too. It isn’t to me so much a matter of being obsolete but in this situation it does make me reconsider buying the phone, in fact I’d bet at this point I won’t and I’d originally planned on it.

      • Except.. the longer the delay, the more reasonable it would be for some people to just wait for the Droid Bionic.

I mean, I can’t upgrade until March 24th.. so for now the delays don’t bother me. What worries me are the rumors about battery life and 4G issues. If there’s any truth to them, I’m at the point where I’m seriously considering just waiting another 2-3 months for the Bionic.

New phones aren’t made obsolete in a matter of weeks, but Jose is right.. there are better phones being manufactured all the time. I can’t think of an industry that moves as fast as the smartphone industry.. it’s pretty ridiculous.

  5. Some stores are actually putting phones in buyers hands…then taking it back and tagging with customers names. Best Buy reps have been doing their best to support the faithful – even offering moral support and encouragement to fight the urge of buying a different phone. At some point, this will be a very interesting story about corporate jockeying and leverage…especially once the device hits… battery life? connection speed? real 4g benefit?… For now we wait.

    • LTE may be very different for phones than it is for laptops and the like..i dont think its fair for us to assume that they are the same.

      • …except it is, just like a 3G modem uses the same 3G data connection as, say, the iPhone 4 on Verizon.

      • …except it isn’t. If the problem is with the battery as one rumor has it, it would make perfect sense why there’s a problem with the phone that isn’t also with your LTE laptop modem. Of course, the problem wouldn’t be with the LTE network, then, but with the phone’s response to it. A reliable rumor I heard was that the phone had trouble switching between 3G and 4G signals when a 4G signal wasn’t good, and the battery kept dying as a result of all the searching. This would explain the software fix vs. a hardware one. Very plausible, very likely.

      • Right! Yet another “reliable rumor.” Doesn’t that term explain itself? It makes no sense at all. Much like the ones who spread those silly “reliable rumors” do. Yada, yada, yada…

      • Or it could be complete B.S. and the phone could be fine and it’s something to do with how iphone just came out…no one REALLY (except for Verizon and possibly HTC) knows why, the reason I’m personally upset is that we are not getting any answers for all these delays. And when they do come out with a release date they (verizon) better be able to give us the reason(s) as to why this all transpired.

      • …except it isn’t. If the problem is with the battery as one rumor has it, it would make perfect sense why there’s a problem with the phone that isn’t also with your LTE laptop modem. 6. So there may be the beginning of a falling out between HTC and Verizon, but what concerns me is getting a phone that works properly. If the delay on Verizon’s part has been correcting poor battery life–or some other problem–then I’d rather wait the few extra days or weeks.

  7. What everyone seems to be overlooking is that maybe Verizon struck a deal with Apple not to release a phone within 30 days (one that can compete). Verizon then makes excuses to the public about the HTC Thunderbolt having issues and pisses off HTC. HTC finally grows a pair and threatens Verizon and now we have a release date.

  9. it might not mean much, but i’ve seen 5 Thunderbolt commercials (HTC, not verizon) today while watching G4. i’m at home all day due to an injury i received from work so i watch a lot of tv =/ i saw the one verizon t.bolt commercial a while ago, but only once. seeing multiple commercials for the t.bolt via HTC marketing, again, not verizon, gets me excited that maybe a release date will come any-day now

      • after the cortisone shots i fully plan on doing so. but until then, the slipped disk between my L4 and L5 vert. say that i can’t.

      • Buck off, Buck!!
Hang in there Jason. I’ve had multiple surgeries on my L4/L5/S1. It knocked me clean out of work, so, pardon the pun…you better watch your back. When it goes, it’s gone.
I’ve seen the same TV ads. Who knows what either HTC or Verizon will do. Here’s hoping.

  11. Great! Another blogger spreading more rumors. I don’t give a damn about what someone heard from someone who heard from a reliable source! None of it is ever true. The eager public bites on these rumors and take it as truth. The only time anything official was ever released regarding the date was at the CES in Jan. They said in Q1. Guess what folks, Q1 isn’t over yet. Just because unofficial leaks and rumors went public, everyone got their hopes up. Truth is, if the rumors had never been spread, everyone would be ok with the end of March date. It’s funny how pissed off everyone got with the “delays” when it’s their own fault for being gullible. Now to justify the “delays”, there MUST be something wrong with the phone, network, and now…… companies feuding.

  12. Was at Verizon today and they dont have those Phones in the store…They dont even have them in there system to know when they are due out. This is total BS! They are clueless and dont know nothing, HTC rep was just there and they didnt know either.

  13. I went into my local Verizon today to see if they had a floor model I could play around with. The Rep told me they haven’t heard anything on the TB since end of Feb, when it got delayed. He said the 10th didn’t seem likely to him because they’ve gotten absolutely no word on it, but he did say that they didn’t recieve the iPhones till the day before launch.. so not having them in store doesn’t necessarily mean they wont be sold come the 10th.. they just don’t have confirmation on any release date as of yet. But they did have answers to my 3G vs 4G questions and some specific to the thunderbolt, so it would appear that they’ve already been trained on the device.. I’m so sick of my Droid X.. I’ve had it replaced 7 times since launch on 7/15..ready to move on!! Cmon Big Red, get with the program before HTC cans your a**es… just saying…

    • It’s funny you say you’ve had your X replaced 7 times since the launch . I have had mine since October and have had it replaced 4 times , and it still needs to be replaced . AGAIN ! Problem is that the last one I returned showed up as delivered in their system by FedEx but it was never applied to my account , because they sent me a NEW one in the box , not a like new replacement and when I returned it , I didn’t send back the box . My mistake , but still . I am holding out for the TB , not another X . Seems you’ve been more patient then me and I didn’t think that was possible .

  14. You know what really sucks? I know someone on the inside at verizon, and they said they are working on new pricing plans for the 4g. they are planning on announcing price increases for all 4g plans.

    • I really do not see how Verizon will increase price plan for 4G. Based on Price Plan decrease for 4G LTE data services by $10 per month, it does not make any sense. Internal employees do not know anything, unless they are top 10. Everything else just rumors, which being spead in anticipation of something happening. Verizon stated of release of 1st LTE device in 1st quarter, which ends on March 31st. Verizon will not release unproven phone without being 100% sure that everything works. If you want bad device and poor network, Metro PCS is your option

  15. You know what really sucks? I know someone on the inside at verizon, and they said they are working on new pricing plans for the 4g. they are planning on announcing price increases for all 4g plans.

  16. After reading about the comments made by Verizon’s CFO, it would seem plausible that they are having some trouble internally deciding how to price their smartphone data packages going forward. If you read the comments, it is apparent that the Thunderbolt is going to set a standard for Verizon, not just for now, but for all smartphones going forward. I would imagine this could become the focal point of an internal debate as to how to tier and price these plans. Speed and usage are now part of what can be limited, which increases the possibilities. Verizon is probably running the numbers on all of them and I’m sure even with the margins figured out, it is still a tough call. Just a thought…

  18. You guys & so many other tech news actually wrote an article based off a bunch of rumors?

The source you claim is actually just the twitter postings of a guy (@sentrix27) who was sure the HTC Thunderbolt was going to be released on 3/4/2011, by a chat he had with a supposed VZW insider…which time has proven the guy’s info was crap.

That passed. Stop quoting unreliable sources!

Alex Bussani (@sentrix27 – Twitter) has thrown out a lot of HTC Thunderbolt info (and that’s where you and all these others are taking this rumor to news from!)

How do we really know if HTC & VZW are pissed at each other? It’s been 2 days, no announcement of release date and ads are still up and running! Even @sentrix27 is sick of being asked for more updated info & has stated he won’t comment / answer anymore on the HTC Thunderbolt. Apparently his source was crap & you’re all quoting it as if it really came from a reliable source! Please get the facts down, you’re only contributing to people being more pissed off and VZW hasn’t actually given a date of official release!

  19. I am a rep for verizon. We have all the accessories for it, and two dummy versions, just no real ones yet. We went through all the training for it late january, but still had no official word. Shipments come in mondays at my store, so who knows, maybe tomorrow i’ll find out for sure.

    • Ok so you all are going off some bogus information. The delay shockingly has nothing to do with vzw, its acctualy to do the thunderbolt has been riddled with issues. Such as battery issues, skype issues and some issues with utilizing lte 4g towers. Now I have been informed certain features like skype might not be available at launch. There will be a update down the road. And all you impatient people who are not aware vzw said at microsofts keynote when introducing the phone late march since we are not even midway through march I don’t see where any one can be mad. Yes upgrading would be nice believe me I am still using the first droid and it is painful at times but I would rather release a finished phone then one with a bunch of issues so all this about htc being mad at vzw obviously isn’t true if its htc having the issues oh and you people saying they are to wrapped up with the iphone that’s incorrect for about 2 years verizon said no to apple who tried to go to vzw and verizon put all its eggs in on droid and rim. And considering they are still number one it appears to have worked they just accepted the iphone as a way of stealing 14% of at&t users so a way of crippling their competition. And lastley vzw in store associates are not the first to know on a release they know when they receive the phone in not befor. Vzw sometimes even advertises a release befor telling them so stop trying to squeeze information out of someone who has no idea and bestbuy ran there ads early verizon probably stated phone was ahead of schedule befor ossues came up and best buy jumped the gun. I expect this phone to be out second half of this month or next month just befor the bionic release. I’m not going to state my sources or who I am or who I work for but I will state I do have ties to verizon and no plenty about the inside corporate set up and I have met ivan (their ceo) befor

    • so ..no shipment huh? I went to 2 stores in NYC and one in Westchester today 3/7/11, That had no clue when it would be in and assured me they have NONE in stock.

    • That is funny….I went to a local Verizon store in Fairview Heights, Il and St Louis, MO looking for accessories and they both told me that they do not and no store will have any accessories until the phone launches which makes me question your integrity about being a Verizon rep or another rumor spreading fool. If you are a verizon employee then you spreading rumors as well.

    • This guy is right. I bought a Droid X the other day in a corporate store in Florida and the rep didn’t have any screen protectors for the Droid X. I was sold the protectors for a Thunderbolt.

  20. Here’s what I don’t get, MetroPCS (who also runs CDMA) released an LTE phone back in October-ish. Granted the Samsung Craft runs a crappy OS, but they also released the Samsung Galaxy Indulge running android about a month ago. Yes, poor battery life is a complaint with both of these phones. So you’re telling me MetroPCS has been able to do this much, but Big Red STILL can’t get out a 4G phone. Way to drop the ball Verizon. Maybe if everyone in that company wasn’t so busy wetting their pants over the 7.5 month old iPhone, they might have at least one 4G phone on the market.

  21. Verizon is just showing that they don’t car about htc. Their new baby is apple and could care less what htc thing and what relationship they have. What can u do about it tho. Verizon is the only one with the network. Htc isn’t the only one who makes phone… let alone android phone. I been dying to get rid of my droid x but i refuse to give in to any other phone than the thunderbolt. What are u gonna do??? Just wait cuz verizon is always gonna do what they wanna do when they want to.

  22. Last night a friend of mine that is a Verizon employee, told me that the reason they keep pushing back the thunderbolt is because of connection problems. Originally they thought they had a battery problem because it would only last a couple hours. They figured out that the phone will not stay connected to the 4G network and is constantly trying to connect which is killing the battery.

  23. Not true, still having problems with the battery issue. Try another month. I work in the shipping and receiving for big red.

  24. Tech Specs for Thunderbolt are no longer available on HTC.com. Why?

Was told by phone rep at Costco that Best Buy would have 30 days exclusive on the Thunderbolt before it is available elsewhere. True?

    • True! (kinda) Talked to a Verizon Gov. Contract sales rep today.3-8-11 14:20hrs. The HTC Thenderbolt is on it’s way to Best Buy. All the stores have to recive them before launch. Any whear from 5-8 days till go time. The Bionic is shooting for mid April. It too is ready to go. They get thiers to play with in 7-12 days. These phones will not be available with Gov. Discount for 30 days after release. Then 30days later a new 4G phone. I was told that from mid March till Aug. of this year a lot of new phones and devices will be poping up from big red. I waited this long I might as well wait for the Bionic…… or Bionic2 at this rate.

  25. Today I told my Verison dealer that I am tired of her company playing games and tomorrow I am going back to AT&T to get a new phone and account. They act like they want to sell their products. Iam sure Iam not the only one that is tired of Verison’s childish games.

    • are you really that dense to think verizon would hold back a phone for no reason? what “games” is it that you speak of? it may be best that you go back to att if you think that.

    • Really? You marched into your closest Verizon store and threatened to leave because a company hasn’t released a phone that they said would be out in the first quarter, while it is still in the middle of…. the first quarter? “Verizon’s childish game” of NOT giving you a phone when a zillion blogs and idiots told you it would be out every week for the last two months? I bet that sales rep laughed at you when you walked out of her store. Go ahead and pay your early termination fees. Then go to AT&T, pay activation fees and prorations, purchase your Atrix, and let the dropped calls commence. While you wait for your huge first bill from AT&T and your final bill from Verizon, the rest of us will be making (and not dropping) calls on our Thunderbolts…. which will arrive before the end of the first quarter. Just like Verizon stated.

  26. I work for Verizon Wireless and we have heard nothing about the release of the phone. We do have some thunderbolt accessories, but we have had those since the originally launch day of Feb 14th.

  27. I hate who ever posted this i actaully believed it and who is your inside source your talking puppet that you put on your hand to immuse your self… srry that was mean but you said the fone was coming out today and it didnt and neither did your reliable source prove anything right!!!!!

    • I guess you’re one of the suckers born every minute. They are selling the phones at santas work shop up north and also at toys r us. They have pink barbie ones for all you gay blades
