MWC 2014 might be over, but the new smartphone announcements aren’t stopping yet. Aside from the HTC event scheduled later this month, we might be getting an official look at Meizu‘s next big smartphone, the Meizu MX4, on Thursday, 6th of March in romantic Paris.
Meizu’s upcoming flagship is still mostly shrouded in rumors, which point to two very different configurations. While most agree that the smartphone will be brandishing a 5.5-inch display, one camp believes in a 2560×1536 pixel resolution, while another has a more common 1080p resolution. Even on the subject of processor the lines are drawn between a Qualcomm Snapdragon or a Samsung Exynos like its predecessor. There are even whispers of a MediaTek chip. The Meizu MX4, however, is expected to be a high-end smartphone, so it will be interesting to see what it ends up with.
Unfortunately for fans of the Ubuntu operating system, this smartphone won’t be what Ubuntu Phone will be using. Based on the recently held Mobile World Congress, the upcoming Ubuntu phones, which will be shipped by Meizu and bq, will be using the older Meizu MX3. That said, that device isn’t that bad, sporting a 1.6 GHz octa-core Exynos 5 CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and a 5.1-inch 1080p screen.
It will also be interesting to see what plans Meizu will have for the MX4 in the US. The Chinese manufacturer has made no qualms about its desire to play in this market, though it remains to be seen whether it will be going with the Android-powered Meizu MX4 or if it will be testing the waters with a new mobile ecosystem based on Ubuntu.
