Samsung may have unveiled the Galaxy S5 last evening, however this morning we are learning a bit more in terms of the processor. The talk from the hands-on time at the event, and benchmarks, showed the handset to be running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 — but there is an update here. The Galaxy S5 has been confirmed with a Snapdragon 801, which has integrated LTE.
For those not as familiar with the Snapdragon 801, this one includes Adreno 330 graphics. This comes with the promise of being able to help with “higher quality imaging with support for larger, faster camera sensors and improved image post-processing, immersive mobile graphics and gaming.” Another perk includes higher speed SD card memory.
Touching back on the integrated LTE and we find what includes LTE Advanced. This isn’t something every market is going to see a benefit from, however it means potential download speeds of up to 150Mbps. There is also dedicated hardware support for dual-SIM and dual active devices found in China.
Shifting to the power and performance aspect and we see Qualcomm has the Snapdragon 801 sitting as a quad-core Krait 400. This can run at up to 2.5GHz per core, and again, has the Adreno 330 GPU which helps for mobile graphics. Qualcomm also mentioned the Hexagon QDSP6, which is said to be for ultra-low power applications. Finally, according to Qualcomm;
“In the Snapdragon 801 processor, Qualcomm Technologies has boosted the performance of these key processing engines, and continues to achieve superior processing performance through the unique and efficient integration of all of its custom-designed processing engines, including Qualcomm Technologies’ heterogeneous computing architecture.”
Otherwise, along with word of the Snapdragon 801 sitting in the Galaxy S5, there was also mention of the Galaxy Grand 2 arriving with a Snapdragon 400 processor. This one supports 4G LTE World Mode connectivity and can run at speeds upwards up 1.2GHz. The Snapdragon 400 will be paired with an Adreno 305 GPU.
Sweet. Getting it.
