There has been a lot of talk lately about fingerprint scanners on our smartphones. From the HTC One Max sporting one on the back, to Apple announcing the iPhone 5s with a fingerprint scanner built into the home button, but now we’re hearing a major Android player has no plans to offer that feature. At least not yet.

Samsung is the number one Android manufacturer with millions and millions of devices sold, and while we have no clue what the future holds for the Galaxy S5 or other phones, one source is killing the idea of a fingerprint scanner already. According to the Korea Herald Samsung is “not yet developing the technology” and doesn’t seem too interested in it either.

We know Apple wasn’t first with the idea, as we’ve seen more than one Android smartphone with fingerprint sensors, but this is the first accurate, secure, and practical use for it. It’s very possible other manufacturers will be looking to integrate this as a new feature on their list of specs, but Samsung might not be one of them.

Samsung does however have stake in a company called Pantech, who’s released a few phones lately with a fingerprint scanner, but we’re hearing their technology is a good year or so behind Apple’s. So that’s certainly not good news. That doesn’t mean Samsung can’t put their efforts behind it and get up to speed, it just appears they don’t have any plans to do so at the moment.

  1. “but this is the first accurate, secure, and practical use for it.”

Haven’t you heard about all the security problems that were uncovered just after the 5s launch? I don’t recall previous Android fingerprint sensors having similar problems.
