The folks from Sony have been on a roll lately, and to many peoples surprise. After launching the Xperia Z Ultra this morning with a 6.3-inch display, and updating multiple smartphones this month to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, they are on quite the roll. Now we’re hearing the aging Xperia Ion is also getting Jelly Bean, albeit an older flavor.

The smartphone has been enjoying Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for sometime on that aging 4.55-inch 720p display and Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, but starting this week users are in for a treat. We’re hearing Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is rolling out for the AT&T model, although you won’t be getting the update over the air as usual.

Users will be required to have Sony’s PC companion software installed, and plug their smartphones into their PC to pull and install the latest update, but at least you’re getting Jelly Bean. It isn’t 4.2.2 like the Xperia Z or ZL, but the update does bring many features you’ve probably been waiting for.

Google Now voice search will be included, not to mention expandable notifications and support for Google’s Keyboard. Then of course Jelly Bean introduced project butter for an even faster and better UI experience across the board. The AT&T Xperia Ion is getting updated to build version 6.2.B.0.211. Get the latest update and give it a try, then let us know how things go in the comments below. We’ll be on the lookout for a changelog.

    • I guess it will not for Lt28At, i also flashed the Lt28h firmware on LT28at phone at the time of ICS.
I guess same we have to do for JB now, as JB for At&t Ion is not delayed but abandoned.

      • Thats what i have read on internet. No verified sources.

It takes a lot of effort and huge test cases to pass before a carrier firmware is releases. That’s why often they(updates) are delayed and sometimes abandoned in favour of newer(flagship). models

      • as of this morning we are NOT receiving the OLD 4.1.2 on AT&T…. Customer (careless) confirmed there were no signs of it in their systems at all. for Lt28at 4.0.4 will be the last OS update we will be receiving

      • Just because they don’t have it in their system now doesn’t mean they won’t get it. Everything I’ve read says it takes a bit to push it through a US carrier. Given that AT&T already gave us ICS and a separate patch build of ICS I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see this roll out within the next couple of weeks.

      • FYI, I contacted AT&T support and got this message back:

I can understand your concerns with wanting to upgrade to the Android
4.1.2 OS (Jellybean) for your mobile device. Although the update will be
available soon, we do not have an exact date. Once it is available, you
        will receive a notification.

      • Just got a response from Sony…

        In
reagards to your inquiry at the moment we don’t have that information
of when Jelly Bean will be available for your phone (Xperia™ Ion
LT28at) due to the fact that AT&T is the one in charge to upgrade
their phones. We are releasing the Jelly Bean update worldwide for
unlock phones, however, as your phone is branded with AT&T they need
to customized the software and this may take some time. I can’t assure
you that Jelly Bean will be available for your phone at this moment.
Sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause you and thank you for
being part of our Sony Xperia™ family.

        BOO!!!

    • Lt28h, Can be flashed on Lt28i also via flash tool. If you use LTE, then check ‘exclude baseband’ in flash tool.

    • just as Pauline implied I’m in shock that someone can profit $4932 in a few weeks on the internet. have you seen this link www.KEP2.com

  1. No update for Xperia Ion LTE in Pakistan. People use Sony products because it is trusted! Sony shouldn’t let people down. Updates released for Acro S etc and not for Ion, that’s not fair at all!

  2. no update in Texas, I check pc companion daily, this is becoming increasingly unbearable since all my friends are using jelly bean 4.1 and 4.2… Sony and ATT need to speed things up, some people are very desperate, A.I. myself
