Samsung are working on an Android-powered device, which will launch in Q2 2009 on Sprint and T-Mobile USA.  According to industry sources, the handset is a full-touchscreen device similar to the Samsung Omnia or Instinct; an unnamed spokesperson for the company has confirmed that the Android phone’s development was ramped up at the request of carriers.

“We are accelerating the development process for Google phone in order to meet the specific need of local carriers.  We will be able to release Google phone in the second quarter of the next year in the US market” Samsung Electronics spokesperson

To do so, Samsung added a further 30 experts in Linux and Java to the task force team of its information and communications division, bringing the total number to 80.  The team had been formed a year ago, and directed to look at putting Google’s open-source mobile OS onto Samsung hardware.

Specific capabilities of the Samsung Android handset are unknown, but it will run the usual Google Maps, G-Talk, GMail and Google Search as on the T-Mobile G1.  If the company is following similar blueprints to their Instinct and Omnia devices then we can also expect minimal hardware buttons and no hardware QWERTY keyboard.

  1. No hardware keyboard? Pity. I love the look of this one, don't care much for hardware buttons (that said, how would this run without Home and Back, in addition to Call and End?), but the absence of a hardware keyboard is a deal breaker for me unless they have a damn good VK. Sadly, the one in Chomp SMS isn't doing it for me, and I've uninstalled it since.
  2. its alrite Ghoonk Google are Developing "Cupcake" which is the new FW for Android which will include a Full VK for use with all programs so that is that one sorted and im sure that the phone will have atleast the required Hard keys. Menu, home,Call on/off, Back ! that phone looks quite nice though
  3. been thinking about this, and have realized how much I would miss the physical keyboard and the trackball. I seem to take this for granted, but as ****ty as the materials are on the G1, the hardware works for me.

My 'ideal' device would be the G1 in the same accents, material and build quality as the Xperia or the LG, so there wouldn't be creaks and the phone would look less cheap.
  4. that's just the Samsung behold with an Android background photoshopped on it
  5. I knew they'd come around lol.
  6. Touch phones are cool and all, but frankly I would much rather have a physical keyboard.
  7. The ideal phone for me would be the G1's physical keyboard, combined with the "SurePress" touchscreen of the Blackberry Storm.
