The very popular social networking application, Loopt has officially made its way to the Android Market. This is one application that we have been waiting for since the launch on the T-Mobile G1. Now you can spy on all of your friend and see where they are and what they are up to without having to ask.

Loopt allows you to keep track of your friends, where they are and what they are doing. You can share you location between carriers with Loopt users on AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, Boost, MetroPCS and T-Mobile. Loopt is available on over 100 handsets including the iPhone and BlackBerry so all your friends can stay connected.

“From the start, our goal has been to build a ubiquitous interoperable network in which customers don’t have to worry about who has what provider or mobile device,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of Loopt. “

Loopt for Android will offer all of the current core features you would expect to find in other versions, including background location updating which enables users to receive alerts when a friend is nearby. You can also view your friend’s location in satellite view or map mode as well as monitor traffic delays. Loopt also allows you to share you information with social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter or personal blogs and Web sites.

  1. I must have this "Andorid =" phone you speak of
  2. Ah, it's not available outside of the USA
  3. well i went to the site, it didnt show up as the "android" specific page, just the regular page and then when i click on get loopt, it says too mny server redirects on their end....

so is there a direct site for android? or a downloadfile?
  4. Why not post the full story? O I see your running a competing blog and web forum and want to drive some traffic to your site.

I love how you do not offer any other sources other than your own site, but you say you were reading on someone else's blog.
  5. I had a feeling this would come out. I was at st. stephen's green (a bar in mountain view), and I heard a bunch of guys toasting "android!!" and drinking. Thought it might have been the google guys, but I spotted a few wearing loopt shirts.

Was going to say hello, but decided to get a beer instead

  12. Seems that I need to have a US number to use this app. I guess users without a US mobile number need not bother for now
  13. Imma download this first thing tomorrow and make sure I get my partner to install it! Imma be "Stone...The Rican stalker". hahhahhahahaa. I'm kidding..I think. lol.
  14. On a serious note. Those considering installing note please read this from the loopt website. In a time when horrible persons are commiting crimes to those they meet online or the clubs, I thought I should post this. Thanks.

    1. Only add friends to Loopt who are really your good friends.

Loopt is meant to be used with good and trusted friends. Who's a really good friend? Ultimately, that's up to you to decide, but here are a few questions to ask yourself about potential Loopt friends.
    • Do you have their phone number?
    • Do you know where they live and where they grew up?
    • Would you loan them your car?
    • Would you give them your keys to feed your dog or water your plants?
    • Would you feel comfortable knocking on their door just to say 'hi'?
    2. Confirm the phone numbers from your invites.

Always double-check that an invite was sent from your friend's real phone number. If it's a web invite, check that the phone number on the invite matches your friend's number.
    3. Know who you are sharing location with.

Use your location information responsibly. Loopt is built to let you control when and with whom you share or hide your location. You can always control who can find you, and who can see the location of your journal entries. You can do this from the web or the mobile app.
    4. Report inappropriate behavior and offensive content.

Help us keep Loopt fun! We've built Loopt to encourage safe behavior from its members, but unfortunately some members may still find ways to abuse the service. If you find material that is offensive or find that a member of the service is acting inappropriately, please let us know using the Report Abuse page.
    5. Some tips while using Mix on your iPhone.

Don't know what Loopt Mix is?
    • Don't put your contact information in your public profile (full name, email, phone #, home address, etc.).
    • Don't believe everything in a profile. Users are able to freely edit their name, photos, interests and affiliated groups.
    • Use good judgment when sharing your full name, email address or phone # with another Mix user in emails or when meeting in person. Act as you would with any other stranger. Don't share information until you can trust them.
    • When meeting up with another Mix user, always meet in a public space with people around. Bring a friend or at least let a friend know where you're going.
    • If another Mix user is acting improperly or suspiciously, block the user and report the abuse case. Do not exchange emails with them for fun.
Have fun and thanks for keeping our Loopt community fun and safe!
  15. How come I don't see it in app market?
  16. Hmmmm. Seems that although Loopt is an app that is advised for use with known friends and family, there's also a looptmix beta version in the app as well that is used to connect with persons you DON'T KNOW. As with everything...be careful and use common sense.

    Just search for "loopt"

    I found it that way.
  18. Just tried to register. It says it is sending a txt message to verify my number. Not getting the txt message though. Fail.
  19. Stone, very good advice. I am going to check it out, not sure if I know anyone else that uses it though.
  20. Loopt is awesome, especially for those of us living in the Bay Area. Great tool, no doubt about it.

    Magic and Moonbeams.
  23. That was my second guess. Is this a developer privilege?
  24. I am checkin it out right now... the bad part is that my g1 doesnt have my location using gps it has a nearby location on here... i guess thats safer than my exact location...

The android OS has what are called intents. When you clicked on the link, the browser fired an intent to see another web page. However, the market also registers for that intent and when it gets one directed towards it, it steals the call rather than giving to the browser. I use a similar method now for GasBot updates so that you can click a button and it'll open up the market right to my app.
  26. I see. Nice trickery. One more question and I'll stop, how do you get the address of the app?

I start from id=1 and keep guessing until I get it right?
  28. Well that wouldn't take long, probably only six or so possible choices.
