Android Community is hearing from multiple T-Mobile G1 users that Android 1.5 “Cupcake” is being pushed out as an OTA upgrade.  The system update, which was released officially to developers earlier this week, will be rolled out to handsets throughout May, according to one report.

Cupcake 1.5 brings with it an on-screen QWERTY keyboard, necessary for the new breed of Android devices which lack hardware keyboards, such as the HTC Magic and Samsung I7500 (which will have the new version out of the box).  Other improvements include direct photo and video uploads to Picasa and YouTube, respectively, together with various behind-the-scenes improvements such as faster browsing courtesy of new JavaScript and webkit engines.  Video demo here.

Reports are telling us that the update is reaching users in the US and Europe.  The Android 1.5 system update is a 44MB file, and as yet there’s no way to artificially trigger its download, only wait for your carrier to push it OTA.  Keep track of progress in this forum thread.

  1. Link no worky, mate.
  2. " only wait for your carrier to push it OTA"

Yep, but if i've imported the G1 to switzerland ??
I don't want to put a non official firmware on it ...

It never does with these news posts.

I just go back to the main screen to read them.

Here's hoping I get my update soon!
  4. That's what I had to do. I will be taking my phone with my to bed just to make sure if the update comes over night I will hear the little jingle.
  5. Can we get some manual update love again? Point us to the site already...

Yep !!! (because no OTA in switzerland)

it seems the user who have received the OTA can find it in the logcat output "adb logcat" and search for a url "http" should be good enough.

  7. JF mod should be close now!!
  8. Sweet! There should be an official "I've received cupcake" thread lol I can't wait!

  10. We might need to check xda frequently now...
I think us non rooted people are now the minority on AC...
  11. "The Android 1.5 system update is a 44MB file"

so it means that if i only have 41mb in my phone available (which i do) then i wont have enough to DL it?
  12. The explanation is complicated but the answer to your question is...you will be able to download the update. The space available is not the space used for the update..
  13. No, that's the size of the file that will be on the sd card; it won't be that much on your phone once it's unpacked and installed. Better not be.
  14. Cannot wait until I can just perform this update via the update.zip on my SD card unless I get the OTA update first.

    Yay for cupcake!!
  15. As I said in another post,I just got off the phone with t-mobiles PDA/Smartphone/Android support and he did say that the 1.5 update has been released today He said it's just a matter of time when google pushes it to our phones. So it most definately is confirmed!!!!!
  16. Wow, I can't believe it. Up is down, and down is up. Cupcake, that mythical update that I believed in when I was young (along with Santa and the Easter Bunny), is real and released. This changes everything; I now have to reevaluate my outlook on life.

    Same. Doesn't work for me.
  21. @RoboCop; It takes something big like Cupcake to lure me out of the shadows. I got bored with loitering around this forum listening to people complain about stupid ****. lol
  22. Based on some convo over at the xda forum, it appears to be the ADP update.

Actually there is a part of the G1's internal memory that we don't have access to. If you ever check the max memory you have to download apps its around 70MB. The other 180MB is for updates and some other thing (I forget). So yes you will be able to download it. I'm also positive once it is downloaded it gets erased but I'm not a 100% sure.
  24. @Kommie- you notice my post count hasn't exactly been going thru the roof either..lol.

  30. Gotta wait for the T-mobile update.zip to hit the Internets. No one's snagged it yet. Just the Dev1 version, which won't work on non-rooted retail G1s.
  31. Hmm, don't know if I should stay with rooted cupcake or go for the JF 1.5 when both become available.

I haven't much luck with JF before as my phone got locked into a continuous loop, twice.

    Apps2SD isn't a problem, I have 33mb with browser taking up 12mb, so 45mb if I clear it.

Only thing I'm missing is custom theme?

For some reason, my phone is running much faster stock than it did rooted and modded.

Possibly because I dl'ed a bunch of apps. I don't know. I'm not really missing the custom theme that much.

I've been runnign JF Updater every couple of hours for 3 days!!!! I want I want - And actually I was going to give up on root access when cupcake released, but with the banning of the wifi tether and needing root access for the app I do have that still works - I have to keep it with the mr JF..

I got a message that says "No signature" any help?
  36. WIth everything I'm seeing, this appears to be OTA for the dev phones, not the retail T-Mobile G1 phones. This is why it doesn't work, it doesn't have the proper signature for a retail G1 update.
This is NOT the T-Mobile G1 OTA.
  37. "Allison" claims she got the update this morning on a retail (non-dev) g1.

  38. anybody knows how much space we need on phone memory to install the cupcake !? because we already had problem with low space on phone memory ! 44MB
  39. will i get the Cupcake update even though i don't have a sim card on my G1? i switch phones all the time my G1 was already activated already and just used it all day today then put my sim from my G1 into another phone and i just have the WIFI on only on my G1 to see if i can get the Cupcake update.
  40. I am pretty sure you need the SIM in the G1.
  41. even though i have already activated my G1 and used it today i will still have to have my SIM in there in order for me to get the Cupcake OTA update? I thought once the phone was activated i would be able to still get updates over WIFI?

Strange i thought you didn't need to have a sim card in the G1 in order to get OTA updates onces the G1 was already activated? Can anyone else please help me verify this please?
  42. It's possible. I really don't know.
  43. I just dont want to go and change my plane again from a blackberry to a G1 plan just to get the Cupcake update. Anyone else know if i can have the SIM card out and get the Cupcake update through WIFI with an already activated G1?
  44. if u really want the update just wait for the file so u can flash it onto your g1. thats what most of us are waiting for.
  45. I just had a thought, will Haykuro's 1.5 receive a notification of updates? I know the JF builds didn't, did H block that particular ability in his?
@Kommie, we need more big bangs around here to keep you around then, huh?

I just wanted to know if i have to have my sim card in my G1 in order to get the cupcake update that's all. And if i can get the update through WIFI instead.
  47. i was just giving u another alternative. it will most likely be on ac a few days before u get the update.

I know you were giving me another alternative and i appreciate that very much, but i just want to know the answer to my question that's all. I just don't want to keep having to keep calling T-Mobile up and then have to switch my plan from a blackberry plan back to a G1 plan.

I have my WIFI running all night with out my SIM card in my G1 and my G1 is already activated and i am hoping that i would still get the Cupcake update over WIFI.
  49. cupcake will come when it comes!!

    relax guys.
  50. Exactly. It's not that big a deal.

Johnny - I am a bit off topic but I notice you are in So Cal. Do you have 3G off or just not in a 3G area?
  51. Wow the bulls beat da celtics. Lmao

  54. You proabbly wont get your update pushed to you without your sim, you may be able to use the check for updates feature though, after the push WOULD HAVE gone to you.

I think google would be the one to ask on this though. - tMobile will almost definitely give you as many answers as they have tech support personnel..
  55. T-Mobile reps might be as bright as a shattered bulb, but they know how to take care of their customers.

I went over by 75 minutes last month. I called and gave them some excuse, and they upgraded my plan and back dated it so that not only did I not have to pay for the overage, but I actually got minutes back. This is one of several instances when they have gone above and beyond for me. As for how they treat customers who haven't reached my leet 5 year status, who knows.

Thank you for your answer since i have a blackberry plan I might have to revert back to my G1 plan until I get the update then go back to my blackberry plan again since my blackberry plan will not work on a G1?

I've always gotten great service from them, far better than AT&T and Verizon. I've been with them longer than any company.

I know this may not be related, but when you running w/o sim, do you get update notifications on your apps? Curious anyway...

I always get good service from them when I call. They treat their customers well. My little brother went over his text messages and I wasn't aware of it and they notified me and changed my plan then back dated it to lower the costs.

  64. NO ! I am not joking, I got it at 8:00 clock in the morning to day ! Its awesome but also a little bit weird. because no one believes me my friends haven't got it yet !

    where are you located?
  67. never mind; i see you over in the UK thread
  68. Yeah, Tmo will make an announcement when it happens in the US (it is one of their top selling phones), guaranteed. They want the press.

I discount anything anyone says until their PR goes out.
  69. yup, actually I am in UK.
  70. Did TMo make an announcement for the other upgrades?

They have confirmed in the past, and typically will issue a press statement.
  72. Okay. I couldn't remember. I just saw others getting the update and waited for my phone to make a noise at me.
  73. Out of curiousity, why would cupcake be released in the UK and the US at different times? It doesn't make much sense to me...

could it be that it might "tie up" the system or something? Several times early with the iphone, when there was a release that went out to everybody at one time, it froze apple's servers for hours on end...later updates were stagered..
  75. My friend has been told by TWO people from T-Mobile that only 1000 people are receiving the update. And that if he went in to a retail store they would do it for him within the hour.

I don't believe this at all but if two different people have told him then. :/
  76. I've received the cupcake too this afternoon....am in the UK..Unfortunately my battery was very low so the update was not complete.Am charging it now so hopefully when its full it'll be completed
  77. How good is Cupcake?
  78. I have the JF root version of the ADP 1.5 cupcake and I love it, I read today on engadget that had a link directly to the officla tmobile forums that they announced that the offical retail version for non rooted g 1 owners will be released at the end of next week for OTA updates, but it also mentioned that just like all previous OTA retail builds released that they will "roll" out meaning the US market will get them at staggered times through out MAY, however just like before when RC 29 and RC 33 came out Im sure someone will link the Download for maunal installation if you can't wait.
  79. I've got cupcake this afternoon, pretty cool however not everything seems to be working.
Well in my case it didn't.

    For example:
Not all widgets have been added yet such as calender && voice recognition (idunno how you write it =.=) didn't work for me.

Videorecorder works and the improved auto rotation is cool tho etc.
I didn't check everything yet since my battery died on my way home from school.

I'm not sure if this is a test version what I've been reading about but it's better than nothing ^-^

    btw, I'm from The Netherlands
  80. It was actually pretty easy to get some facts from tmob. which is a nice change of pace since dealing with them is usually a nightmare. i just spoke to "J.D." at the g1/blackberry support line. though he would not confirm whether cupcake had been released in the U.K. and on what date. however, he did inform me that the U.S. rollout date is on may 11th. he would not confirm the strategy for rollout such as certain markets first or 3g receivers getting priority. but hearing the fun was starting in just 2 days was good enough for me.
  81. hmmm thats greeeat news BUT reading around these threads it seems that every CSR has a different launch date lol
