Acer Stream gets official: AMOLED, 1GHz and HDMI [Video]

27 May 2010 by Chris Davies

Acer have officially unveiled the Acer Stream, the company’s latest Android smartphone.  Running Android 2.1 Eclair on a 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the Stream has a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, HSDPA, Bluetooth and WiFi b/g/n.  There’s also 512MB of RAM, 2GB of onboard storage (plus a microSD card slot) and a customized Acer UI.

A 5-megapixel camera can be used for 720p HD video recording, and there’s an HDMI port for hooking up your HDTV.  Elsewhere Acer has stuffed in GPS, UPnP and DLNA compliance.  The whole thing measures 11.2mm thick.

No word on how much the Acer Stream will cost, nor when exactly it might launch, but it was spotted earlier this week clearing the FCC.  That certainly suggests a US launch.

Update: Batista70Phone have a video demo of the Acer Stream:

Press Release:

Acer Stream

the Perfect Entertainment Machine

Powerful. Spectacular. Cutting-edge technologies. State-of-the-art connectivity. Ultra-fast. Highly sensitive. These are just some of the words that best describe Acer Stream, the latest technological jewel of the Taiwanese company. Defining it a smartphone would be reductive. In fact, Acer Stream is the utmost expression of technology, design, performance and entertainment.

Acer Stream is a high-end multimedia smartphone, optimized for watching movies, listening to music and enjoying web browsing like at home. Perfect for most demanding users who look for the best in entertainment.

Elegant and minimalist in design, Acer Stream is made from highly resistant materials and offers truly outstanding user interface and technical features, all in just 11.2 mm, ensuring users a unique and unrepeatable experience.

The completely brand new user interface has been totally redesigned in order to focus on what is essential to users and guarantee a simple and quick access to what matters to them.
- Enjoy smooth animations and fine graphics: surf between photos and video thanks to the stunningly fluid 3D interface and unlock the phone by a ‘peeling’ gesture, assure a cool but very functional detail!
- Read information straight from the lock screen widget: accessing ambient information on the idle screen gives the user what he needs before he even asks for it.
- Quickly start your favorite applications with one tap: the status bar appears as an innovative divider between logical spaces. It shows all the essential information, providing shortcuts to most frequently used settings and its position allows a very easy access to the settings or notifications.
- Easily switch applications with the History panel: the top part of the Home screen has been dedicated to applications history, with the benefit of reducing complexity and providing significant cues for navigation.
- Reorder applications across several pages at their convenience: Apps can be moved around from one page to another or easily uninstalled by simply dragging them to the bin.
- Customize the phone according to specific needs:a simple customization page accessible from the Home screen will be a pleasant surprise, enabling customers to tailor their smartphone through wallpaper and sound personalization.

Coupled with three types of predictive keyboards, a smart dialer and a redesigned contacts list, the Acer user interface makes using the smartphone an efficient and delightful experience.

Social and entertaining: All the most popular applications are pre-installed: Nemo player to enjoy multimedia content to the fullest, Acer UrFooz to create your virtual “look-a-like”, add your profile and bookmarks and post it to your social networks, Facebook™ and Twidroid perfectly integrated into the address book.
And for music addicts Acer Stream features Spinlets™, a completely free streaming service that lets you browse and listen to major music labels and record companies for great music and instantly post what you find to your favorite Social Networking sites.

Main features:
Superb display quality: the touch screen with Amoled technology boasts 1.67 million exceptionally bright colors, through a generous 3.7” WVGA display. Furthermore, its incredible contrast (superior 2000:1) makes for clear images and perfect legibility in any environment and light condition. Moreover, this type of display consumes less energy to help increase battery life.

Ultrafast connectivity 3G+ for streaming: HSDPA 7.2 Mbps in download, Bluetooth and WiFi n, enabling faster transmission of multimedia content than ever!

Power and performance: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor, with its 512 MB RAM, makes the Acer Stream one of the fastest and most reactive phones on the market. The operating system behind Stream is Android version 2.1, better known as
Éclair.

Unique and high-quality multimedia features, enabling the recording of HD videos up to 720p. Listening to your favorite music or the radio with RDS has never been so pleasant; enjoy the Dolby Mobile quality, with powerful bass and crystal-clear clarity for an unparalleled purity of sound. UPnP technology enables content sharing with other devices. Furthermore, a 5MP photocamera and integrated GPS system allow photos and videos to be geotagged. Last but not least, you can connect the Acer Stream to your home TV with HDMI port and watch a movie on a larger screen.

2GB of internal Flash memory is ideal for downloading tons of applications and 3D games, while an 8GB memory card as free bundle and a micro-SD card slot support up to 32GB enables users to enjoy their favorite multimedia content at all times.

  1. Sounds like an ugly sister to the Desire (looking at the specs) without Sence UI...
I do like the 2Gb inbuilt storage though. If Froyo hadn't come with the option of apps to the SD card that would have been great

IMO, if the phone comes without sense UI. It means it will get new android update first.
  3. I like the phone, I wouldn't want a phone with any kind of sense ui. Had a Samsung Behold II I won and sold it within 2 weeks, Touch Wiz, sense, it's just not true android.

I really like Sence, if you have played with a desire i think you'd agree that Sence really adds to Android where so many other UI overlays take away.

hehehe.. so many. I can post more than this also but some times I couldn't get time to post due to office work. And many people in this forum are from US and I am from india. So, when I came to office and start posting, everybody in US are going to sleep. So, I cannot participate in live discussion.
  11. By no means is TouchWiz comparable with Sense, TouchWiz sucks in almost every way possible. Sense has deep customization and the most beautiful UI of any kind. And the widgets are the best hands down.

Thank you djunio! i really agree. many (like almost all) UI overlays just suck but i really feel that Sence from HTC improves the basic Android experiance.

For example, all of the additional options for the camera you got with 2.2 we still have more options now with Sence and 2.1.
  14. The biggest downside I see to running an HTC Sense device is the inability to upgrade to the latest releases of Android when they are released (therefore adding additional functionality).

Sense always seems to be lagging one version behind. Perfect example, Sense 2.1 was just finally released (officially) to devices. And we all know that Android 2.2 Froyo is out.

you have me there... i do have to agree that i'm not exactly happy about having to wait untill 'the second half of 2010' to get my serving of Froyo

Though i am excited to see what extra features that they'll add to Froyo with Sence
  16. Looks pretty awesome to me. I hope they clean up the look of the phone itself a little more. But other than that, this might be my next phone! I was looking at the Samsung Galaxy S, but the only thing it doesnt have is HDMI out. And my TV doesn't support any internet capability. Unless maybe there will be an app to get around that, then I'll get it. I'm curious, does anyone know if the Galaxy S only has the Yahoo Mail and Calendar? Or does it just offer it built in and you can still use all the standard Google apps?

Agreed on that part. I saw sense UI on HTC desire. It's pretty awesome.

Try multi-quote button to quote 2-3 replies.

I've installed froyo on my N1.
  20. lol yea, i saw that after i did it... oh well.

what, in your opinion, are you most using in Froyo? is there anything that is really revolutionary... that you can't now think about being without?

Speed. Froyo has amazing speed compared to its previous version 2.1. I love it. Although I like following changes in froyo.

    - Speed
    - USB/Wifi tether
    - Inbuilt Twitter client
    - Unlock password protection (previously it was only pattern matching)

Some how there is a multi-colored trackball notification, but I couldn't enable it. I am expecting native OS notification will have multi-colored trackball glow function in final release of froyo.
  22. ok i accept the speed bit... and i'm looking forward to that aswell!

I have usb tethering with Sence - and as it is a smart phone i always have my USB cable with me for the lunchtime charge. so unless i went and got an iPad (with no USB connection, what a stupid move!) i don't see why i would need wifi tethering?

I also have both Peep and Sence's 'Friend Stream' built in for Twitter. Friend Stream does need a bit more development as it is not perfect but is really good for updating my Facebook and Twitter at the same time!

    What is unlock password protection?

Wifi tether is good when you're outside of house and cannot use wifi networks (like we have no wifi in villages in india). Where I can use my mobile internet to connect my laptop using wifi and have a great surfing on laptop.

Unlock password protection mean. I can provide a password protection while unlocking (screen unlocking) the phone. Previously it was only pattern matching (green 9 dots kind of) provide.
  24. ahh, ok.

i quite like the pattern unlock... do you really need it to be more secure?

i see, i supoese it is cool to be able to leave your phone in your pocket and not worry about the wires etc.

Yes with password protection it gets more secured. You'll get more combination in password protection than the pattern one. when you're unlocking the phone anybody can easily see your pattern when you're making it on your phone.
  26. yea i supose. it is quite easy to see the pattern.
typing a password would get really annoying everytime i want to see the time though!

yeah password typing is annoying. But some people prefer passwords over pattern. So android has given both the options.

    BTW check your PM.
  28. yes yes, i'm getting there! lol :P
  29. It looks sluggish and doesn't react well to the touch, it looks really bad. They really need to tweek it! Also, they should of added a front facing cam, but I do applaud them for the internal 2gb of memory. I've always enjoyed Acer products, they're reliable and longlasting but they really need to step it up, too much competition going on right now. Personally I wouldn't even consider this phone just from looking at the video of how it wasn't responding to the touch.
