OEMs have sworn that 2016 is the year when they will be pushing virtual reality onto the consumer. And they weren’t kidding. Or at least Samsung isn’t. Popular YouTube creator Casey Neistat got two gifts earlier this week: the chance to go to the Oscars and the chance to bring along the Samsung Gear 360. The recently unveiled virtual reality camera is set to officially be available this March 11 and so Samsung thought of doing a test run with Neistat and showing people just what this portable and relatively affordable camera can do for you.
The entire video shows Neistat preparing to go to the Oscars which happened last February 28, up to his walk on the red carpet and even up to the moment when Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar after 5 previous nominations. And while we would have wanted less of the hotel footage (including a shower scene) and more of the red carpet, it does show off how portable the Gear 360 is. You can even put it inside your ref for a POV shot of you getting food and then looking around at what else is in the ref.
Viewers will of course get the whole 360 experience as well. If you’re on your desktop or laptop, you can manipulate the video angle. And if you’re on your mobile device, just move in the direction you want to see. But of course this will work perfectly if you have a VR headset like a Samsung Gear VR or a Google Cardboard. It was amusing to see how people on the red carpet were reacting to it though.
The video was shot in 4K HD but the quality isn’t that impressive. There is still room for improvement in the image department. There is still no news how much it will cost, but that may make all the difference whether the public will bite or not. In the meantime, check out our hands on the Samsung Gear 360.
This is a great promo for Samsung to highlight the Gear 360. Can it stream to Facebook with the incoming Android update?
