The new version of Yahoo! Mail app for Android is still not ready for download from the Google Play Store because it’s still in beta mode. For the few millions of Yahoo mail users (me included), this new and upcoming version is very much welcome because the app definitely needs some updating.
Yahoo is believed to be working on bringing Material Design goodness to some of its Android apps and the first one is Yahoo! Mail. It looks nice with the new icon, floating action button, and the side menu now sliding out on top of the action bar. The last biggest update the app received was last year when travel event notifications were added. A minor update was quietly released a few months ago that brought real-time updates from Amazon shipment and flight notifications’ support for Orbitz and CheapTickets.
You’ll notice the colors have changed. Yahoo used gradient (dark to light purple) this time as noted by Android Police. App looks really lighter now and easier to use compared to when the background was in darker purple.
Aside from handling your Yahoo! Mail account, this Android app also brings Yahoo News headlines. Click on the newspaper icon you see located in the action bar. You’ll be taken into the section where the latest news are listed. Click on one and the full text will be shown. Sorry, zooming is not allowed and text may be small to read for some. Before public release, Yahoo should better look into that one.
Yahoo! Mail users on Android should expect a better and “materialized” app soon. The beta version was once available from APK Mirror but was requested to be removed by Yahoo. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the official and updated app to be released on the Google Play Store. It shouldn’t take Yahoo a long time to make the necessary updates and launch this new version.
