We’re patiently waiting for the recently leaked Redmi Note 2 phablet to be released next week but Xiaomi surprised us today by announcing the Redmi 2 Prime. This model was introduced in India where the mobile device was actually made, specifically in Xiaomi’s Sri City manufacturing facility. Nothing much is different from the improved Redmi 2 entry-level smartphone that launched earlier in January as the design, look, and feel of the phone is the same.
This may be another enhanced Redmi 2 but the specs announced are twice as better—double the built-in memory and RAM at 16GB and 2GB. The standard features are still present though: 4.7-inch HD display screen, 8MP main camera, 2MP front-facing cam, dual-SIM support, 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 chip, WiFi 4G connectivity, and a 2,200mAh battery.
Xiaomi’s Redmi 2 Prime phone may be new but it will only have Android KitKat and MIUI 6 pre-installed. No mention if it can be updated to Android Lollipop and the upcoming MIUI 7 but I don’t think that’s impossible.
In India, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime will be sold for Rs. 6,999 which is only about $110. That’s a very affordable Android smartphone we just know it will sell a lot on Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Amazon.
