Samsung has had a substantial history of making “mini” versions or variants of their flagships. They might not have packed the oomph that you would want in a mini flagship – the OnePlus X as a “mini” for the OnePlus 2 remains our standard – but they have existed. True, a Galaxy S6 mini never materialized despite of rumors to the contrary – but there was a Galaxy S3 mini, a Galaxy S4 mini, and a Galaxy S5 mini. Would there be a Samsung Galaxy S7 mini?
With rumors of an Apple iPhone SE at hand – purportedly a 4-inch smartphone with an A9 processor and the works – pundits are looking towards Samsung if it will release a mini variant for its newly launched flagship. Rumors out of Taiwan says that execs at the Korean gadget giant are pleased with the initial interest for the Galaxy S7, and they might decide to come out with a Samsung Galaxy S7 mini.
Now, the rumors say that this will be a 4.6-inch phone powered by a Snapdragon 820 or an Exynos 8890 chipset. That, if true, would be against the usual for Samsung, as they normally put in lower chipsets and specs on their past mini variants. But looking at the relative success of the OnePlus X, they might be convinced to run with the same pattern – given that most pundits’ aversion to Samsung’s earlier mini variants was that they were totally underpowered to be even be a “mini” for their flagships.
Reportedly, the mini variant will feature 3GB RAM and a 12-megapixel rear camera in a form factor that’s just 9.9mm thin. Of course, all of these are rumors, and you can chomp on your fistful of salt right now. Let’s see in the next few weeks if there is enough substance to this rumor.
