You can understand from the hullabaloo caused by issues on USB Type-C cables and chargers that consumers will be feeling hopeless in protecting themselves from bad USB accessories. Consumers want to be careful, but added to that, they want their devices to just work. If it charges faster, so much the better. So they’re caught in a bind when manufacturers like Google, OnePlus, LG, HTC and a gamut of lesser known accessory manufacturers can’t get their standards for USB Type-C straight, putting devices and people in danger.

So it’s a breath of hope when the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) – the support organization for the implementation of USB standards and technology – steps in and puts out a compliance program for USB Type-C devices including laptops, tablets, smartphones, docking stations, displays and other products. If your device or accessory is compliant – meaning that they are usable interchangeably with other compliant devices – you get to slap on the spanking new compliance logo to your packaging or the product itself.

When this starts to happen, consumers can start buying devices, chargers, and accessories with confidence, knowing that their accessories can be interchangeably used by their laptops, smartphones, and tablets. By definition, certified USB chargers will resemble a traditional power brick or wall wart, and will provide faster charging and with compliant USB Type-C products.

“The future of consumer tech is mobility and letting technology disappear into the background,” said Rahman Ismail, USB-IF CTO. “Certified USB Chargers will give users an interoperable power source and a seamless experience. From displays, to smartphones and docking stations, the industry is aligning behind USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery as the last wire you’ll ever need for faster charging.”
